Alan Jones says Julia Gillard's dad 'died of shame' | thetelegraph ...

THE radio star was talking at a Liberal Party event and was unaware that his highly insensitive comments were being recorded

VETERAN broadcaster and 2GB host Alan Jones has claimed Prime Minister Julia Gillard's father died of "shame" because of the political "lies" his daughter told.

He told a group of 100 Young Liberals that John Gillard's death was the fault of his proud child.

He went on to suggest Ms Gillard's tears of grief, for a man she publicly said she "will miss for the rest of my life", were what sparked a sudden leap in political polling for her.

Mr Gillard, a former psychiatric nurse, died in Adelaide on September 8, age 83.

The remarks occurred during Mr Jones' 50-minute speech at the annual $100-per-head Sydney University Liberal Club President's Dinner, on the top floor of Sydney's Waterfront restaurant in The Rocks last Saturday.

After referring to Ms Gillard's track record with telling the truth to voters over issues including the carbon tax, Mr Jones said her father's death was caused by the Prime Minister herself.

"The old man recently died a few weeks ago of shame," Mr Jones told a group of party members and MPs, including Alex Hawke, Ray Williams and Sussan Ley.

"To think that he had a daughter who told lies every time she stood for parliament.

"Every person in the caucus of the Labor Party knows that Julia Gillard is a liar."

Some members of the audience gasped with surprise.

The radio star went on to say Ms Gillard had enjoyed a recent spike in polls sparked by her tears. He also said she was being given an easy ride by the "brainwashed" Liberal Party who had backed down because she was a woman.

Organisers of the dinner were not aware a journalist from The Sunday Telegraph, who had purchased a ticket, was present.

While paying tribute to her father in parliament on September 19, Ms Gillard spoke of the rough and tumble of politics and how that affected the family.

She said her father "felt more deeply than me, in many ways, some of the personal attacks that we face in the business of politics, but I was always able to reassure him that he had raised a daughter with sufficient strength not to let that get her down".

Mr Jones made several mentions about why Liberal leader Tony Abbott should be Australia's next PM.

"His overweening weakness is his humility. You will never ever hear this bloke argue his ability, his virtue, or indeed his competence," he said.

"He is a man of incomparable integrity and conviction."

The broadcaster said it was vital every member of Mr Abbott's party united behind their leader in the lead-up to the election. Mr Jones said some members of the Labor caucus were scared of the Liberal leader and others thought he was sexist.

Yesterday Mr Jones did not respond to approaches from The Sunday Telegraph.

The event was staged by Sydney University Liberal Club president and aspiring MP Alex Dore. Mr Jones has endorsed his political endeavours.

Yesterday, Mr Dore said Mr Jones had not made the comments about Ms Gillard's father. Later, informed there was a recording of the speech, his position changed.

"It was a very long speech and I did not hear it. I have always found Alan to be respectful," Mr Dore said.

He said there was "no need" to "pick apart Alan's speech. All you are doing is reducing it to a very small thing which distracts from the issues facing Australia".

Mr Williams would not be drawn on Mr Jones' remarks.

"I will just let this one go through to the keeper, the room was a bit a noisy at the time, I can't remember him saying it," he said.

Fellow MPs Mr Hawke and Ms Ley could not be reached.

Mr Abbott had previously expressed his condolences for the Prime Minister.

"This is a tragic time for (Ms Gillard) and we all feel for her at this very sad time," he told parliament. "It is a remarkable parent who produces a prime minister of this country."

During the five-hour event, three spoof songs were sung by Young Liberals member Simon Berger, Woolworths' government realtions manager.

Prostate cancer testing and treatment guidelines developed

ScienceDaily (Sep. 29, 2012) ? Julio M. Pow-Sang, M.D., chair of Moffitt Cancer Center's Department of Genitourinary Oncology, and colleagues have published two prostate cancer articles in the September issue of JNCCN -- The Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. The articles review and clarify recent updates made to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network's (NCCN) guidelines for the screening and treatment of prostate cancer.

According to the NCCN, nearly 242,000 cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in 2012, accounting for 29 percent of new cancers among men. It is estimated that more than 28,000 men will die from the disease this year.

According to the journal, prostate cancer is "over diagnosed and over treated" and is subject to a controversy "fueled by large screening studies." This month, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, the NCCN has offered support for active surveillance, a strategy by which men with low-risk tumors, often classified as clinically insignificant, are monitored over time.

"Depending on the disease characteristics and the patient's life expectancy and personal preference, active surveillance may be a viable alternative to immediate and radical treatment," Pow-Sang said. "For others with high-risk, localized tumors or locally advanced disease, there are recent treatment advances that should be considered."

New agents and therapy combinations According to the NCCN, external beam radiation and androgen deprivation therapy have been the traditional treatments for patients with high-risk tumors. However, the NCCN reports that brachytherapy, either permanent seed implant or temporary placement (high dose radiation), combined with external beam radiation and androgen deprivation therapy is increasingly being used for these patients.

The first article, Prostate Cancer, version 3.2012, noted that two new agents -- abiraterone acetate and immunotherapy sipuleucel-T -- are welcome therapeutic additions for patients with late-stage disease and poor prognosis.

Abiraterone acetate, which inhibits a key enzyme related to prostate cancer, can be given to patients after their chemotherapy. Studies have shown that it can also be used in chemotherapy-na?ve patients.

Sipuleucel-T, a second line therapy, is a live cancer vaccine approved in 2010 for treating asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic patients with metastatic prostate cancer. The NCCN has recommended the new drug for use after chemotherapy failure or as treatment along with chemotherapy.

"The new NCCN guidelines highlight important updates to the management of prostate cancer," concluded Pow-Sang and his co-authors. "These protocols are updated annually and more often when new, high-quality clinical data become available. The guidelines are based on evidence from clinical trials combined with expert consensus."

Active surveillance and PSA density, percent free, and biopsy cores

In a second article, Enrollment Criteria Controversies for Active Surveillance and Triggers for Conversion to Treatment in Prostate Cancer, Pow-Sang and co-author David D. Buethe, M.D., a urologic oncology fellow at Moffitt, examine the controversy and criteria for implementing active surveillance for patients with asymptomatic prostate cancer and identify the triggers that would convert active surveillance patients to active treatment status.

The authors note that for those patients with prostate cancers at low-risk for progression, the active surveillance strategy was proposed a decade ago but is recently receiving more attention as a viable management option.

"However, critical uncertainties still surround active surveillance," Pow-Sang said. "The criteria that qualify a patient as low or very low risk are not clear, nor is the definition of disease progression."

In this article, Pow-Sang and Buethe reviewed recent literature regarding those uncertainties, examining criteria for assisting in selecting men for active surveillance, including PSA density, percent free versus percent total PSA, biopsy positive core results and "volume of involvement" data.

"A PSA density of greater than 0.08 ng/mL/g has been identified as a significant predictor of future disease progression in those with low-risk prostate cancer," reported Pow-Sang. "However, some clinicians use a level of 0.15 ng/mL/g as a threshold."

Percent-free PSA has been found to be a significant predictor of organ-confined disease, said Pow-Sang and Buethe, noting that some reports have shown a significant indirect correlation between percent-free PSA and prostate cancer volume; but as yet this parameter is "not widely accepted as a predictor of cancer extent."

They also looked at studies on positive cores from biopsies and the extent to which core results could be used to develop criteria for treatment. Reports have shown the predictive value of positive biopsy cores, but the frequency for performing prostate biopsies remains controversial for outcomes of active surveillance patients, Pow-Sang said.

"Biopsies are not without consequences," he said. "Rectal bleeding and serious infectious complications from frequent biopsies need to be considered."

Additionally, no standard protocol exists, and controversy remains, for the frequency of PSA testing and the digital rectal exam for patients who are under active surveillance.

"Current guidelines vary," Pow-Sang said. "There are recommendations that the PSA and digital rectal exam should be performed every three to six months, or the PSA every three months and the digital rectal exam every six months. The frequency of biopsies is also variable, from once a year to up to every three years."

New potential tools

Pow-Sang and Buethe also report that a new tool, the PCA3 urinary marker, may be useful. PCA3 is a urine test used to quantify copies of the known prostate cancer gene 3. A PCA3 score of 35 or greater is considered possibly malignant. The test is prostate cancer specific and unaffected by prostatitis or benign prostatic hyperplasia, both of which have confounded the results of PSA testing.

The future of active surveillance

"Most studies report that 30 percent of active surveillance-classified men will be reclassified in the short term to clinically significant cancer that may require treatment," noted Pow-Sang. "Once more, PSA velocity (how quickly the PSA score rises) or PSA doubling time (how often the score doubles) has no clear role in active surveillance."

When counseling men with early prostate cancer, all treatment options, risks and complications should be discussed, Pow-Sang confirmed.

"Active surveillance is a reasonable management strategy for low-risk and very low risk prostate cancer, but allows for continual reassessment and identification of progressive tumors."

Lake Forest horse racing, restaurant plan still in the gate | horse ...

LAKE FOREST ? Six guys from South County who bought a former Black Angus site just off the I-5 hope it will be the place to be during next year's Kentucky Derby.

They envision a room filled with ladies in hats, an upscale restaurant and a betting scene where patrons can gamble on the ponies while watching the races on big screens.

Developers Bruce T. Lehman, left, and Brad McKinzie are two of six partners planning to transform the former Black Angus restaurant in Lake Forest into a high-end restaurant and sports bar with satellite horse race betting. The site is near the I-5 Freeway and Lake Forest Drive.

EUGENE GARCIA, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

"We want to build a fun, vibrant, classy place where horse racing becomes a social activity," said Brad McKinzie, one of the six partners hopeful that the city's Planning Commission lets them open Sammy's, a fine-dining restaurant with mini-satellite horse wagering. "Having it open for the Kentucky Derby ? now, that would be fun!"

City officials aren't so sure they'll bet on the idea just yet, however.

McKinzie, a 25-year executive at the Los Alamitos Race Course, and his longtime friend Bruce Lehmen, a real estate developer, say the Lake Forest location is the perfect spot for a vision they've been crafting with their golfing buddies for three years.

But while the six call it perfect, city planners haven't given the OK to spring open the race gates. The Planning Commission reviewed the project two weeks ago and had some concerns. They questioned how well an adult-use business fits into the family-minded Lake Forest vibe. They also wanted to know more about plans for the exterior and changes to the parking lot. McKinzie and Lehman, who with their partners bought the 10,000-square-foot building in 2009, want it to operate as a trendy restaurant with a mini-satellite horse-wagering lounge as an extra.

Planning Commissioners are interested to hear more about the proposed $1 million remodel of a building near the city's gateway. The developer proposal calls for a renovation inside and out, including new landscaping and an upgrade to the weed-overgrown parking lot.

Jerry Verplancke, commission chair, said that while the applicants had hoped for an immediate decision, commissioners are still considering many factors related to the gaming lounge?? among them, a proposal to require that guests be 21 or older. Since Sammy's is being billed as a high-end American cuisine restaurant, commissioners asked the applicant to rethink how it might become a family-oriented place in addition to being a wagering lounge.

Commissioners will also consider how the zoning code affects combining gaming and dining. Security concerns will also be taken seriously, Verplancke said. The commissioners will also balance the city's family-oriented theme with a request for an adult-oriented business.

In past years two adult clubs at the city's entrances?? Captain Cream (also known as Captain's Cabaret) at Lake Forest Drive and Rockfield Boulevard and the Library Gentleman's Club at El Toro Boulevard and Rockfield?? shut down. A Hooters restaurant that opened three years ago in the former Library building also recently closed.

In turn, city officials have focused their efforts on reinvigorating old shopping centers, spending more than $800,000 renovating 10 city parks and building a state-of-art $39 million sports park The city is also continuing to focus on the community recreation center and completing a final gap closure on Rancho Parkway. In the next few years, developers are expected to have built more than 4,000 homes in the city.

"Our job is to look at the code and decide, is it prudent to have this here?" he said.

The commission plans to revisit the Sammy's concept at its last meeting in October. In April, the panel approved an ordinance that allows mini-satellite wagering.

In 2007, the California Legislature passed a law allowing mini-satellite wagering facilities at restaurants and bars. All wagering would be operated by Southern California Off Track Wagering Inc., an association of race track and race horse owners created to oversee and administer statewide satellite facilities. According to law, the facilities must be 20 miles from a horse track and 10 miles from another satellite wagering facility. The closest wagering spot is in San Clemente.

McKinzie, a Huntington Beach resident, said he and others in the industry were delighted when San Clemente's OC Tavern, already popular for sports-watching, decided to go for the mini-satellite horse racing.

"We all made pilgrimages down there when they opened," he said.

Planning Commissioner David Carter also reported to his colleagues that he went to visit the site. It's different from the one McKinzie and Lehman have planned in Lake Forest, he told them. The tavern was already a sports bar when satellite wagering was added.

Phillip Ramminger, a manager at the tavern, said business is booming even more with the horse racing. A lot of locals were really excited for it to start up but the bar draws people from all over. He also said it's brought in a new type of clientele.

"It's a lot higher-class?? there are a lot more Bentleys parked out front," he said. "Everyone is like a family. Everyone helps each other out. If one has a good pick on a horse, they have no problem telling other people about it. They're real gentlemen."

That demographic, McKinzie said, one he perceives as underserved in the Saddleback Valley, is what he envisions at Sammy's in Lake Forest, too. He and his partners want to take it up a notch by also offering fine dining and dancing. They like the Lake Forest area's demographics and view their clientele as a high-end, higher-educated and older group.

"We won't have children throwing cheese pizzas or offer booster seats here," Lehman said.

Designs call for one-third of the restaurant's space to be a horse-race wagering room. The room would be decked out with leather-upholstered chairs, two- and four-person tables, and soffits housing high-definition, flat-screen TVs showing horse races from local tracks.

Horse race fans would be able to bet on live races from Thursday through Sunday. All the money bet would go to the same pool as those betting at Santa Anita Park, Los Alamitos Race Course and Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. The advantage, Lehman said, is horse race fans could experience the thrill of live racing without having to drive to the track.

By state law, only those 21 and older would be allowed in the horse room during betting days, which generally are Wednesday through Sunday. Operating hours would be 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Friday. On Saturday and Sunday they would be from 9 a.m. to midnight. Security guards would be present during wagering and an armored transport would remove the money.

Before the 2007 law, off-track bets could be placed at other racetracks, some tribal casinos and fairgrounds, and by phone and on the Internet. Yet horse racing still faced falling revenue. McKinzie said establishing mini-satellites would attract new bettors and generate more money for the industry. And just maybe those new bettors would go to the tracks and become horse-racing fans, he said.

In Lake Forest, Lehman and McKinzie said they expect to hire at least 40 people. The city would also get one-third of 1 percent of what would be wagered at Sammy's, McKinzie said.

Lawmakers wanted to boost the industry to save thousands of jobs and revenue generated for the state by the horse-racing industry, said Rod Blonien, a lobbyist for Los Alamitos Race Course in Cypress.

Findings hold promise for heart regeneration and understanding congenital heart defects

A new regulator for heart formation has been discovered by studying how embryonic stem cells adjust the packaging of their DNA. This approach to finding genetic regulators, the scientists say, may have the power to provide insight into the development of any tissue in the body liver, brain, blood and so on.

A stem cell has the potential to become any type of cell. Once the choice is made, the cell and other stem cells committed to the same fate divide to form organ tissue.

A University of Washington-led research team was particularly interested in how stem cells turn into heart muscle cells to further research on repairing damaged hearts through tissue regeneration. The leaders of the project were Dr. Charles Murry, a cardiac pathologist and stem cell biologist; Dr. Randall Moon, who studies the control of embryonic development, and Dr. John Stamatoyannopoulos, who explores the operating systems of the human genome.

The paper's lead author is Dr. Sharon Paige, a UW MD-PhD student who completed her Ph.D. in Dr. Murry's lab.

The results are published in the Sept. 28 edition of Cell.

Paige, an aspiring pediatric cardiologist, said, "By identifying regulators of cardiac development, this work has the potential to lead to a better understanding of the causes of congenital heart disease, thereby paving the way for therapeutic advances."

Previously UW researchers had examined the signals that prod cells to grow into various kinds of heart tissue. In this case, the researchers entered a relatively unexplored area. They decided to look at the genetic controls behind the transformation of stem cells into heart tissue.

Because stem cells keep their DNA code under wraps until needed, the scientists examined how this packaging is altered over time to permit reading of portions of the code and thereby produce changes in the cell.

DNA is wound up into a structure called chromatin. "DNA can be packaged as tightly closed, neutral or activated," Murry explained. The tightly closed state, he said, is analogous to setting the brakes on a car.

Like a child who clams up when asked, "What will you be when you grow up?" stem cells are protective of the genes that will determine their future cell type, or what scientists call their cell fate.

"We found that stem cells take great care to avoid turning on cell-fate regulating genes at the wrong time," Murry said. "These genes have their brakes on until they are needed." When the time is right, he said, "the brakes come off and the gas goes on."

He explained that the situation is different for genes that regulate cell functions, in contrast to those that regulate cell fate. Genes that control, for example, the production of proteins that allow the cell to contract or to generate electrical signals do not have such a complex braking system. Those genes can be more readily activated.

The researchers pointed out that it was already known that the patterns stem cells follow to modify their DNA packaging distinguished them from progenitor cells cells prepared to begin a lineage of a particular type of cell and also from cells that already had a working identity, such as blood or muscle cells.

However , the dynamics of the DNA packaging modifications how the packaging is programmed to change over timeand how these dynamics influence which genes are "exposed" and activated to create, for example, heart muscle cells, was poorly understood.

The UW-led research team learned that, as human embryonic stem cells become heart cells, this differentiation is accompanied by distinctive dynamic alterations in DNA packaging. This tell-tale pattern enabled the scientists to distinguish the key regulators of heart development from other genes. The researchers referred to the carefully timed pattern of changes in the DNA wrapping as a "temporal chromatin signature."

Just as a bank robber leaves incriminating evidence in a handwritten note to the teller, the temporal chromatin signature gave the scientists the clues they needed to hunt down new genes that might be responsible for heart formation.

"We found a bunch of them," Murry said. Their system revealed the top candidate to be the homebox gene MEIS2. This gene seemed an unlikely choice because it had no previous record of participating in heart formation. However, when this gene was removed from a new generation of zebra fish, the developing fish embryos had heart tube formation defects and other heart abnormalities.

Murry and other members of the research team think patterns in DNA unwrapping could be broadly applicable to discovering the genes that regulate other aspects of tissue and organ formation beyond only the heart. Such a research approach might help reveal the major developmental decisions that occur inside of cells as an embryo forms and grows. These revelations could provide information useful to spurring stem cells to form specific tissues for organ repair later in life.

Acknowledging the limitations of a lab system in mimicking what happens inside living cells in the early stages of organ formation in humans, Murry said, "The use of the temporal chromatin signature to discover regulatory genes could give us new insights into human development and new tools to control cell fate."

10 Reasons to Do What You Love for a Living

You've heard this career mantra before:? Do what you love and the money will follow. But as any aspiring poet or starving artist can tell you, it just isn't that easy. Finding a way to do what you love and still make enough money to support a family can be a real challenge. Still, many experts say finding a way to follow your career bliss is worth the effort.

People who do what they love for a living tend to live happier, more productive lives, these experts say.

And those who don't are often made sick by working at jobs they hate.

Here are 10 reasons why it is important to strive to find a way to do what you love for a living (or, at the very least, find way to love what you already do).

Your self-esteem improves

Those who do what they love for a living end up feeling better about themselves, said Sherry Mirshahi-Totten, a career advancement coach and the CEO and founder of Roadmap Career Services.

"Your own self-esteem will be higher because you will feel energized by what you do, and your employer will be more prone to rewarding you for it," Mirshahi-Totten said.

You will be motivated

Ellen Ercolini, a career and life coach, believes it's important to do something you love for a living because when the going gets tough (as it assuredly will), you'll be motivated to push through.

"Instead of being overwhelmed with stress for a job that you don't even like, which affects other areas of your life, you have the connection and inspiration to make it work," Ercolini said.

You become a valued employee

A business's best asset is an employee who loves his or her job, said Mary Hladio, founder and president of Ember Carriers Leadership Group, an organizational performance consulting firm.

"Someone who genuinely loves their job is more satisfied and likely more motivated and productive during their time at work," Hladio said. "It is unlikely that they will complain or begrudgingly complete tasks at the minimum level of effort, and instead they will be engaged in their work, proactive and, furthermore, interested in motivating co-workers in the mission and goals."

You earn more money

Professional coach and author Karen Garvey said loving what you do can have a significant positive impact on your wallet.

"The angst of hating one's role often leads to an inability to manifest promotions, sales, raises, etc.," Garvey told BusinessNewsDaily.

Your overall health is better

Author Walter Meyer said having a job you love plays a role in your overall health.

"The tension and pain of doing a job every day that you detest has to take its toll in terms of higher blood pressure, headaches and the rest," Meyer said.

You garner more respect

People who love their jobs often spend extra time making sure they are doing their best work, which executive coach Kathi Elster said will undoubtedly be noticed by supervisors and peers.

"You tend to go above and beyond what is expected, gaining the respect of those you work with," Elster said.

You have a better home life

Personal and business coach Melissa Heisler believes employees who have a job they love will also have a more enjoyable home life.

"Instead of coming home with stress and tension headaches, we return home at night with more energy for ourselves and our families," Heisler said.

You are more productive

Cheryl Palmer, a career coach and professional r?sum? writer, said employees who do something they enjoy for a living end up as more productive employees.

"Studies have shown that employees who are engaged in their work have a higher productivity rate," Palmer said. "Especially since employers are asking more of their employees than before, it helps to love what you do so that you can meet the challenges of the job."

You have improved mental health

As an expert in organizational culture and a professor in the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University, Angelo Kinicki said doing what they love helps employees remain mentally healthy.

"It is important to do something we love for a living because our work lives will then provide meaning and purpose, which are associated with psychological well-being and health," Kinicki said.

He points to Viktor Frankl's book, "Man's Search for Meaning," which notes people need a guiding purpose in order to live a happy and health life.

You can serve others better

Finance consultant Derek Olsen believes consumers naturally gravitate more toward employees who love their job than toward those who don't.

"The person who loves their job is much more likely to be better at doing the job," Olsen said. "That means more quality goods and better service for the customer."

Nexus 7 arrives in Japan, better late than never

Nexus 7 arrives in Japan, better late than never

Well, it took a while, but Google has finally launched the Nexus 7 in Japan. The tablet made its state-side debut in July, but it took almost three months for it to cross the Pacific and land in the east Asian nation. Pricing is a little higher than what we've seen everywhere else, with the 16GB model selling for ¥19,800, or about $312. It makes a perfect companion for the recently updated Play Books app that also just made its debut in the Land of the Rising Sun.
