Factbox: Northeast service suspensions due to Hurricane Sandy

(Reuters) - As the U.S. Northeast recovers from Hurricane Sandy, the following is a list of service updates for New York, New Jersey and the District of Columbia:

More than 18,100 flights have been canceled and that number is expected to rise, according to flight tracker FlightAware.com.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said JFK and Newark airports will open at 7 a.m. on Wednesday with limited service, while LaGuardia remains closed.

Dulles and Reagan airports near Washington, D.C., resumed a limited number of flights Tuesday and many airlines were likely to resume operations on Wednesday. Some flights were operating at Philadelphia International Airport and Boston's Logan Airport.

US Airways Group Inc was expected to resume service on Wednesday at most airports except LaGuardia, JFK and Newark.

American Airlines has flights scheduled into Richmond, Virginia, several Ohio airports, Pittsburgh and Boston on Tuesday. It said flights may not operate into LaGuardia, JFK and Newark on Wednesday.

United Airlines said the weather had delayed its planned resumption of service at Newark, but it plans to resume inbound flights there on Wednesday if conditions allow.

JetBlue Airways planned to have arrivals only at JFK on Wednesday, and would advise on resuming service at other New York area airports. Delta Air Lines said flights had resumed at East Coast airports outside the New York area and it planned limited domestic flights to JFK Wednesday afternoon.

Amtrak said it will provide modified service between Newark, N.J., and points south on Wednesday, but it did not have a date for restoring service directly to New York City because of water in its tunnels under the Hudson and East rivers.

Greyhound said it would resume limited service to Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia by Wednesday morning, but would not operate to New York or Atlantic City.

New Jersey PATH trains are likely to be suspended for at least a week to 10 days, Governor Chris Christie said on Tuesday.

New York City Subway is unlikely to resume service before four or five days, New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg said on Tuesday.

Mayor Bloomberg said the city hoped to begin limited bus service on Tuesday and restore full service on Wednesday. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said separately that all bus fares would be suspended on Tuesday.

New Jersey Transit, the Metro-North Railroad and the Long Island Railroad were working to restore service to the damaged rail lines, the Metropolitan Transit Authority said.

Bloomberg ordered evacuation on Sunday of the city's zone A that included areas close to the water. The city said shelters would remain open until residents could safely return to their homes.

New York City schools are closed on Wednesday. District of Columbia schools will open on Wednesday.

Federal government offices in the Washington, D.C., area and the District of Columbia's local government will reopen on Wednesday.

Metro rail and bus service in and around Washington, D.C., began running on modified schedules on Tuesday afternoon and were expected to return to normal service on Wednesday, according to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

MARC commuter train service which connects Washington, D.C., with cities in Maryland and West Virginia, will resume on Wednesday.

Maryland state government facilities were closed on Tuesday. Maryland canceled early voting service on Monday and Tuesday for the November 6 U.S. presidential election. The state set a makeup early voting day for Friday.

New Jersey's Atlantic City casinos were ordered to close on Sunday. They are expected to remain closed as long as a state of emergency exists.

The status of official CableCARD tuner support for Windows 8

HDHomeRun Prime

With the official launch of Windows 8 comes the official support of premium cable content via one of the various CableCARD tuners originally designed for Windows 7 Media Center. Silicon Dust is at the front of the pack as Media Center on Windows 8 is already officially supported and the documentation is available for both the HDHomeRun Prime as well as the ATSC or QAM HDHomeRun. The only feature we noticed was not supported for now, is WMC Sync. Ceton is still working on the official driver for its InfiniTV 4, but reassures us that the Windows 7 driver "does work relatively well," although, is unsupported -- the real loss here is that there are no plans to bring the InfiniTV tuner sharing feature to Windows 8. Last up is Hauppauge, who doesn't have a single mention of support of Windows 8 for the WinTV-DCR-2650 on its site (we reached out to them, will update once we hear back). Of course, support by Media Center and Windows 8 is one thing, but we're really waiting for a mention that any "Windows Store Apps" that can play nicely with all this premium HD content.

6 left in running for WSOP title, $8.53M prize - KTTC Rochester ...

By OSKAR GARCIA
Associated Press

Three eliminations at the World Series of Poker on Monday night moved six card players a bit closer to guaranteed dream paydays in a tournament worth $8.53 million to the ultimate winner.

Poker professional Robert Salaburu was ousted from the no-limit Texas Hold 'em main event in eighth place after a river queen gave chip leader Jesse Sylvia a higher pair. Minutes later, Michael Esposito went out in seventh, his ace-jack failing to pull ahead of Greg Merson's ace-king.

"I never had cards the whole day," Esposito said. "At the end of the day, I'm going home a rich person."

Esposito won $1.26 million, while higher finishers will win at least $1.64 million each.

Salaburu called an all-in test from Sylvia with pocket sevens, which looked good initially against Sylvia's queen-five. Salaburu, 27, of San Antonio, Texas, won $971,360 for eighth.

He declined comment to reporters at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino after being eliminated, leaving the casino through a back parking lot and refusing to return.

Steve Gee, a 57-year-old poker professional from Sacramento, Calif., was eliminated in ninth place less than two hours into play after testing Russell Thomas with a tough wager for the last of his 11.4 million in chips.

Thomas called and showed a pair of queens, better than Gee's pocket eights.

Gee's ouster meant he made no additional money after a break of more than three months. All nine finalists were paid nearly $755,000, the ninth-place prize, after making the final table in July.

Thomas moved to roughly 40 million in chips after the hand, second at the table.

"If I knew he had pocket queens, I would have checked," Gee said after being eliminated. "I'm disappointed. I told myself I wasn't going to play scared."

The six professionals and three amateurs that started the final table tested each other from the start, re-raising chips back and forth in moves that will ultimately result in everyone - besides the winner, perhaps - gambling their stacks against one another.

On the first hand of play, Gee bluffed Thomas on a pot worth several million chips, though Thomas held just nine high and wouldn't have been able to consider playing the hand to the end.

Esposito, 44, of Seaford, N.Y., was uncertain about the status of his waterfront home as Superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast.

His son, James Esposito, said neighbors have said the streets are flooded, but the family is focused on the card game in the Nevada desert.

"Odds are likely that it's flooded," he said. "I know I saw a picture of the house three doors down - the streets are totally flooded."

Michael Esposito, a commodities broker, was one of three remaining amateurs at the start of the final table. Jake Balsiger, 21, an Arizona State senior looking to become the youngest main event champion ever, and Thomas, a 24-year-old insurance actuary who's helping Aetna adjust to new regulations passed under President Barack Obama's signature health care overhaul, were still alive.

The chip leader heading into the final table was Sylvia, a 24-year-old poker professional who began the final stretch with 43.9 million in chips, just over 22 percent of the chips in play. The other remaining finalists also are poker professionals: 33-year-old Jeremy Ausmus of Las Vegas, 24-year-old Greg Merson of Laurel, Md., and 30-year-old Andras Koroknai of Debrecen, Hungary.

Chips have no real monetary value in tournament poker. Each player at the final table must lose all his chips to lose the tournament, and win all the chips at the table to be crowned champion.

The tournament began in July with 6,598 players and was chopped down to nine through seven sessions spread over 11 days. Play stopped after nearly 67 hours logged at the tables for each player, with minimum bets going up every two hours.

The finalists will play Monday night until only three players remain, then the three top finishers will settle the title on Tuesday.

Petronas agrees to renew bid for Canada's Progress: sources

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysian state oil firm Petronas will renew a bid for gas producer Progress Energy Resources, Petronas sources said, seeking to assure the Canadian government that the C$5.17 billion ($5.2 billion) deal will benefit the country.

Canada blocked Petronas' bid for Progress this month after Industry Minister Christian Paradis said it was not likely to bring a "net benefit" to the country. He gave Petronas 30 days to make additional representations to amend its bid.

The Canadian government, sources have told Reuters, wanted to approve the deal but was afraid that would tie its hands when reviewing a much more controversial $15.1 billion bid by China's CNOOC Ltd for Nexen Inc.

Two Petronas sources familiar with the deal told Reuters on Monday that the firm agreed to the extension and was eager to complete the acquisition despite the shock decision by Canada.

The Petronas board agreed to the extension at a regular monthly meeting, the sources told Reuters. The Malaysian firm is also studying additional steps to reassure Canada that the proposed acquisition will meet the "net benefit" requirement, the sources said.

"Petronas will go all the way to secure this deal. It is important to Petronas that the deal is done," one of the sources said.

Spokespeople for Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Paradis were not immediately available for comment.

Officials from Petronas and Progress held talks in Ottawa last week with Investment Canada, part of the country's industry ministry. Canadian officials are drawing up new guidelines for investment by foreign state-owened companies, possibly complicating Petronas' attempt to improve its offer.

Petronas sources said Canada was not keen on Progress being delisted from the Toronto stock exchange if the Petronas buyout was approved, due to concerns about accountability.

CNOOC has pledged to seek a listing of its own shares on the Canadian exchange, establishing international headquarters in Calgary and retaining Nexen's staff and capital spending.

"Progress is a much smaller deal than Nexen is the argument and Petronas has promised to retain Progress staff," said the second Petronas source with direct knowledge of the deal.

"After all, we need the expertise in unconventional oil and gas, but we now need to make changes to convince Canada."

Petronas officials say they will underline their plans with Progress under an existing joint venture to build an LNG export terminal on the Pacific coast.

"Petronas is moving on with this joint venture for the LNG export terminal. It will bring about more jobs," said the second source.

Progress CEO Michael Culbert has blamed a "communications breakdown" for Canada's rejection of the deal, and said he was optimistic the deal could get back on track.

Harper's office has declined to comment on whether CNOOC-Nexen derailed the Petronas-Progress approval, or if there had been any miscommunication between his government and the companies.

Hurricane Sandy grounds thousands of flights

NEW YORK (AP) ? Hurricane Sandy grounded thousands of flights in the U.S. northeast Monday and upended travel plans across the globe, stranding passengers from Hong Kong to Europe. The massive storm threatens to bring a near halt to air travel for at least two days in a key region for both domestic and international flights.

Major carriers such as American Airlines, JetBlue and Delta planned to cancel all flights into and out of three area airports in New York, the nation's busiest airspace. According to the flight-tracking service FlightAware, nearly 7,500 flights had been canceled for Sunday and Monday. Both Philadelphia International Airport and Newark International Airport, a hub for United Airlines, each had more than 1,200 cancellations for the two days.

Delays rippled across the U.S., affecting travelers in cities such as San Francisco to Chicago, and disruptions spread to Europe and Asia, where airlines canceled or delayed flights to New York and Washington from cities that are major travel hubs including Berlin, Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

Travelers such as businessman Alan Shrem, who was trying to return home to Boca Raton, Florida after attending trade fairs in Hong Kong and China's Guangzhou, were facing long waits for a new flight.

Shrem said he was "edgy" and "exasperated" after learning his Monday morning Cathay Pacific flight to JFK was canceled.

He learned he could be stuck in Hong Kong for nearly a week because the next available seat was Nov. 4. Cathay ticketing counter staff at the airport put him on a waiting list for seats that could become available earlier, but he didn't hold out much hope.

"I don't know what number I am, I could be 300. They don't even tell you. They just say: Yeah, it's a pretty big waiting list," said Shrem, throwing up his hands.

Shrem, whose company produces signed sports memorabilia, was one of a handful of travelers trying to rebook their flights at Hong Kong's airport. Cathay urged people whose flights had been canceled not to come to the airport. In the meantime, he'll have to fork out $400 a night to continue staying at a nearby hotel. The airline won't pay for accommodation for stranded passengers if delays are weather related.

"It's insane. It's crazy. It's going to wind up costing me thousands and thousands of dollars by being stranded here because of the weather," Shrem said.

Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph) as of early Monday, was blamed for 65 deaths in the Caribbean before it began churning up the Eastern Seaboard. Forecasters say the hurricane is about 425 miles (685 kilometers) southeast of New York City and the center of the storm is expected to be near the mid-Atlantic coast on Monday night, colliding with a wintry storm moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic. Experts say the rare hybrid storm that results will cause havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.

At New York's LaGuardia on Sunday, crowds filled the American Airlines terminal near midday, with families sitting on the floor waiting for a flight out ? any flight out. A few travelers were sitting at a bar having a beer, watching football. Others nervously paced before flight information boards showing canceled flights, hoping their flight wouldn't be added to that list. It was almost double the normal crowd. Travelers were calm, but anxious.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs five airports in the area, said it expects all carriers to cease operations Sunday night. It advised passengers to check with their carriers before heading to the airport.

Passengers on Sunday were reporting multi-hour wait times at airline call centers.

Eileen Merberg, 50, was booked on a United flight from her home in Rochester, N.Y. to New Orleans, connecting at Washington D.C.'s Dulles airport.

First, the airline sent her an automated message via email saying that her Washington flight was canceled and that she had been rebooked on a flight through Newark. About an hour later that flight was canceled. Another email informed her she was rebooked through Chicago.

By that point, she already had told the higher education conference that she was scheduled to speak at that she wouldn't be coming. She tried to cancel her flight but United's phone lines were jammed. First she waited 62 minutes before her phone battery died. After recharging, she then spent 45 minutes on hold before a recording told her it would be at least another hour before a customer service employee would be available.

"Then I hung up," Merberg said.

A spokesman for United Airlines parent United Continental Holdings Inc. said the carrier has suspended an unspecified number of flights to New York and Washington-area airports beginning Sunday evening with plans to resume Tuesday as conditions permit.

JetBlue Airways Corp., which flies out of JFK, said it has canceled more than 1,000 flights from Sunday through Wednesday morning.

American Airlines and American Eagle canceled 140 flights Sunday and canceled another 1,431 flights Monday through Wednesday due to Hurricane Sandy, the company said.

US Airways said it had suspended all operations at the three New York airports Sunday evening and Monday and at Philadelphia and Washington on Monday.

Disruptions on the East Coast of the U.S. also impact international carriers. Air France has canceled four Monday flights into JFK and two departures. Lufthansa canceled three flights to the Northeast and one flight out of Newark.

A total of eight flights out of Tokyo's Narita International Airport to New York, Newark and Washington were canceled Monday.

Hong Kong's Cathay canceled its two daily flights to New York for Monday and Tuesday and Air India said its daily flights to Newark and JFK had halted since Sunday.

South Korean flag carrier Korean Air delayed a flight scheduled to leave Incheon International Airport for JFK on Monday by 22 hours. Asiana Airlines delayed its JFK flight from Seoul by 26 hours.

Perhaps you have overlooked an easy solution. Hair loss is not necessarily permanent! You will get some guidance from the tips in this article.

Minimize exposure to harmful toxins or pollutants in order to help keep your hair luscious and beautiful. Toxic materials in the body reduce general health, which in turn increases the risk of thinning or missing hair. Start considering the list of positives with regard to your hair loss. There are a few benefits you may actually enjoy. You don?t have to fret about combing or styling your hair. The time you save in the mornings can be considered a benefit.

If you have hair loss that has come about suddenly, think about any stressful or traumatic events you may have had recently. Take action to reduce your stress level at home and at work. Find a way to relax and take the time to do things you enjoy, and you may find that this stops your hair loss.

Vitamin B12 is available in many supplement forms, and is also contained in meats such as chicken and beef. Vitamin B12 is found in meat and poultry. If you are vegetarian or don?t want to increase your meat intake, you can try supplement pills.

Many of them only work on certain kinds of hair loss and others have little evidence that they work at all. They may work, but you may also waste time and money.

Hair loss can also be caused by many temporary conditions, like anemia, stress, surgery, sickness and changes in weight. These short term hair losses usually occur around twelve weeks after the initiating event has transpired, and then lasts another twelve weeks itself before hair starts growing back. You should understand these concerns, and utilize them for your benefit.

Of course, you will never be happy about your hair loss. However, there are many different ways to treat your hair loss and raise your self-esteem. You need to remember that hair loss doesn?t have to be permanent. You may be one of those with a situation like that. Apply this article?s advice and tailor it to your individual needs! Hurricane Sandy may unleash historic floods in NYC

As Hurricane Sandy heads toward the East Coast, storm crews are placing hundreds of sensors to predict the toll of flooding in the region.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Scientists?pay tribute to?Lady Gaga with ferns

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Lady Gaga is already a huge name in the music world, but now she's a scientific name as well ? thanks to fans who named an entire genus of ferns after the pop star.

    2. Meet the rookies in the Robot Hall of Fame
    3. 'Space Buddha' statue may be a fake
    4. Scientists solve mystery of singing sands

"The combination of an extremely dangerous storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters," according to a National Hurricane Center advisory.

New York City may see its biggest storm surges in history.

"With the high tide occurring tomorrow night, we are looking at many locations approaching record levels of storm surge," said National Weather Service spokesperson Sean Potter.?

Hurricane Irene, for instance, caused surging tides that reached only 4 feet (1.2 meters). In contrast, Sandy is expected to cause life-threatening flooding in New York Harbor and tides of 6 feet to 11 feet (1.8 to 3.3 meters) in areas of Long Island Sound, according to the National Weather Service. For instance, the Battery in lower Manhattan is expected to see 11.7-foot storm surges, surpassing the 10-foot surges recorded in 1960 with Hurricane Donna, Potter told LiveScience.?

A full moon Monday may intensify storm surges, as the moon's tug will make high tides along the Eastern Seaboard about 20 percent higher than normal, Joe Rao, a meteorologist for News 12 in Westchester, N.Y., told LiveScience sister site OurAmazingPlanet.

The storm's projected duration may also worsen flooding. "We'll still see tropical storm-force winds occurring for 24-36 hours starting into tomorrow morning going into Tuesday afternoon," Potter told LiveScience. "That's one thing that really sets this storm apart compared to Hurricane Irene."

As of 11 a.m. ET on Sunday, Oct. 28, the center of Hurricane Sandy was located 250 miles (400 kilometers) southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and 575 miles (930 km) south of New York City. The storm is moving toward the northeast near 14 miles per hour (23 kilometers per hour). The current forecast track puts the center of Sandy near the coast Monday night, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The winds will likely be near hurricane force at landfall, according to the National Hurricane Center advisory.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), along with other federal agencies, are latching 150 storm surge sensors to poles on piers from Massachusetts to Chesapeake Bay. The gauges track wind gusts, rainfall and water levels at the coast, and eight of the sensors track the storm-tide in real-time as it reaches land.

The data could help scientists predict the toll of the storm. (Some 10 million people are predicted to be without power from the storm.) Data from past storms have helped researchers predict which areas will be hardest hit this time around. The sensors were first deployed during Hurricane Rita in 2005 and again during Hurricane Irene in 2008.

Tracking the toll of Hurricane Sandy will help predict flooding in future storms, according to the USGS.

"With Sandy wehave the opportunity to test and improve predictive models of coastal zone impact based on what we previously learned," said USGS director Marcia Hutt in a press release.

Using The Stock Market Wisely: Tips And Advice For New Investors ...

Using The Stock Market Wisely: Tips And Advice For New Investors

Do you want to earn better returns than a bank CD? If you answered yes, stocks are for you! However, before blowing your entire life?s saving on tons of stock purchases, there is crucial information you need to learn about before investing in the stock market. You will find the pertinent information in this article.

You?re becoming a part-owner when you purchase stocks. Many people buy stocks based on rumors, but you shouldn?t forget that when you purchase a stock, you a purchasing a percentage of the company. Research companies whose stock you wish to purchase, so you know exactly what you?re buying.

If you achieve success with a particular business, there?s a good chance it will happen again. This also applies for a negative surprise. So, you need to remember the potential for both developments to unfold when you make investment decisions. Be sure that you are prepared to handle a loss before you make each investment decision.

TIP! You should think about buying some good investment software. Investment software can help you organize your stocks and keep track of them to better understand how the prices are looking.

Invest a maximum of 10% of your capital into any single company. If your stock rapidly declines later, this can help decrease your exposed risk.

Make sure you diversify your investments sufficiently. The money you invest, like the proverbial eggs, should not all go into the same basket. If you put all of your money into one stock, and then that stock crashes, you will be financially ruined.

Define your goals before you buy stock. It may be that you want to build and strengthen your portfolio, or you may be seeking out a low risk way to obtain income. Whatever your goals, being very clear about them can help you choose a good strategy that will help you find success.

TIP! Consider short selling. This strategy involves borrowing shares of stock from your broker.

Stock Market

Monitor the stock market before you actually enter it. Before plunking down real money, you can avoid some of the common beginner mistakes by watching the market for a while. Prior to investing, try to follow the stock market for at least a couple of years. If you are patient and observant, you?ll understand the market better and will be more likely to make money.

Try to maintain a realistic perspective when you invest in the stock market. While there are years you can have double-digit returns, those returns are the exception rather than the rule. Keeping realistic exceptions about your investments will make it easier for you to reach your financial goals.

TIP! You should invest based on the company?s returns on its stock rather than on your opinion of the company?s management. Company management often changes faster than the economic nature of the company.

Before putting your hard-earned money into the stock market, you should practice. This doesn?t even require any software. Just select a piece of stock, and jot down what the current price is and why you are choosing it. Finally, you should track the stock for a pre-determined amount of time, so you can see how your theory compares to it?s actual performance. This way, you can see how your judgement plays out without causing yourself any loss of money.

Choosing stocks with above-average growth rates is a great strategy, but don?t aim too high. The valuations of this class of stocks are more in line than some stocks classed as high-growth. Stocks that are high growth are usually high priced and in great demand, meaning they wont meet your expectations.

TIP! Do your homework and research a brokerage firm before trusting them with your money. There are many firms out there who promise to help you gain a lot of money in the stock market, yet they are not properly skilled or educated.

Invest in companies that you are familiar with. Some of the market?s most successful investors, such as Peter Lynch and Warren Buffet, have directly attributed their success to constraining themselves to investing in industries they were familiar with. Peter Lynch said the reason that he did not invest in electronics was because he did not understand them. Instead he invested in apparel and consumer staples. The lesson here is to deal mainly with those things which you can understand.

Keep in mind that there is a lot more to a stock than an abstract asset that you can buy and sell. A stock represents your ownership of a piece of the company that issued it. You become vested in the earnings and assets that belong to the company. In some cases, you can even vote in major elections regarding corporate leadership.

Don?t just look at the price of a stock. Look at its overall value. Is this purchase going to be a long-term investment? If the price of a stock seems to be too low, make an effort to find out why. Do not go into buy a stock at a decreased value if you are not certain that you will increase your portfolio in the long run.

TIP! It?s critical that you choose industries that you understand. Familiarity in an industry means that you will know what to look for when you invest.

Now that you are better informed, is stock market investing still alluring? If you are, then get for what the stock market holds. Apply the tips that you?ve just learned, and soon you?ll be competently buying and selling stock without damaging the value of your savings account.

Alicia Keys Blog: My Style Reflects How I Feel on the Inside

The greatest thing about looking back at old photos of yourself is seeing how much you’ve changed in just ten years. We all do it in one way or another. We look at ourselves and say something like, “Wow, I look so young!” (I personally start with, “Awwww… look at lil' Alicia!”), then we notice our hair and following that is usually something like, “Oh my LAWD! What was I wearing?” And then we let out a big laugh thinking about what was going on at that time. But that’s what’s so great about old photos (and memories): We have a chance to look back and forward at the same time… knowing we’ve evolved in ways we probably didn’t see coming back then.

Neo Geo X hands-on

When the Neo Geo AES hit the scene 20 years ago, it was one of the largest, most powerful and most expensive game consoles the market had to offer, ringing in at a steep $650. Used AES machines aren't much cheaper, and modernized slim variations don't cost a penny less than the original hardware, either. A full home console might be a bit outside of the average gamer's budget, but SNK's 20th anniversary Neo Geo X hits a little closer to home: $200 for a portable handheld, 20 pre-loaded games, a faithful recreation of the original console arcade stick and an AES-shaped charging / controller dock that pipes video and audio out to a proper television. The end result? A handheld dressed up in a home console's skin. This is something we needed to see -- we spent some time with the setup to give it a once over.

Asia stocks fall on weaker US housing data

(AP) ? Asian stock markets fell Friday after the latest data on U.S. housing dimmed hopes of improvement in an industry that is crucial to recovery in the world's No. 1 economy.

The National Association of Realtors' index of sales agreements showed Thursday that the number of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes rose only slightly in September from August. That suggests sales may level off in the coming months after solid gains in the past year.

The figures were a letdown for investors whose hopes had been bolstered by data Wednesday that showed new home sales rose last month to the highest annual pace in the past two and a half years.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.9 percent to 8,973.97. South Korea's Kospi slid 1.5 percent to 1,896.70. Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.9 percent to 21,620.87. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.7 percent to 4,478.60.

A mixed batch of U.S. corporate earnings did little to kindle interest in risky assets. Infant formula maker Mead Johnson Nutrition reported revenue well below what analysts expected. Profits at United Airlines slid with fewer people flying. But consumer products company Procter & Gamble posted earnings that beat analysts' estimates.

Investors preferred to book profits on recent gains while waiting for additional data to confirm recent signs that China's manufacturing slowdown may be close to bottoming out.

"The Hong Kong market is at a relatively high level. We need more data to confirm what is our next move, so now it's time for profit-taking," said Linus Yip, strategist at First Shanghai Securities in Hong Kong.

Among individual stocks, Kia Motors Corp. tumbled 5.8 percent after the company reported a third-quarter net profit that was below expectations. The company, South Korea's second-largest carmaker, was hobbled by a labor strike over the summer and weak domestic sales.

Samsung Electronics fell 2 percent, even though the company posted a record third quarter profit as concerns over long-term growth weighed stocks down.

But Hong Kong-listed Bank of China rose 1 percent after announcing its quarterly profit rose 17 percent despite an economic slowdown.

On Wall Street on Thursday, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.2 percent to 13,103.68. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 0.3 percent to 1,412.97. The Nasdaq composite index rose 0.2 percent to 2,986.12.

Benchmark oil for December delivery was down 57 cents to $85.48 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract gained 32 cents to finish at $86.05 in New York on Thursday, its first rise in four days.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2934 from $1.2949. The dollar fell to 80.07 yen from 80.29 yen.

How to ditch your debt before the holidays

By Andrew Housser

Picking out the perfect holiday present for loved ones can fun. Yet, it's painful if the sting of holiday overspending lingers into the next year. If you still remember (or feel) the financial pinch from charges you racked up during last year's Black Friday, follow these strategies and ditch that debt before this holiday season is in full swing.

1. Come up with a payment plan.

It feels great to pay off a debt, regardless of how small the amount. Start by putting as much as you can toward your smallest debt while making minimum payments on all others. Once that small debt's gone, add the amount you were paying on it to the minimum you have been paying on the next smallest debt until it is paid off. Repeat this process until you are debt-free. Research has shown that this method?-- "the snowball method"?-- can be the most effective way to pay off debt for many people, because it feels great to close out a balance. But if you are carrying debt with a sky-high interest rate, you might wish to focus on paying it off first to prevent overpaying in interest (the "avalanche" method). Whichever method you choose, making a plan can make it happen.

2. Dip into your savings.

It is smart to have extra cash in reserve, and you should not deplete your emergency savings fund. Yet, it also is senseless to have money in the bank earning a return of less than 1 percent while credit card companies are charging 15 percent interest or more on your debt. In these circumstances, using a portion of your savings to pay off a high-interest card can be a good move.

3. Reduce expenses.

Comb through your monthly expenses and look for ways to save dollars. Can you split the cost of gas and carpool to work? Make your coffee and lunch at home and forego the drive-through? Scrutinize your utility bills to see what extra services you can live without, such as caller identification or specialty cable channels. Start differentiating wants from needs, and the savings can add up dramatically.

4. Negotiate with creditors.

Talk to your creditors about your financial situation to see if you can reduce your interest rate, minimum payment or both. See if they will match any lower-interest offers that you may have received from other credit card companies. Most creditors would rather work out payment plans than lose money completely. They also don't want you to take your business to another creditor.

5. Get help if you need it.

If you realize you absolutely cannot pay your debt by yourself, now is the time to get help. Depending on your individual situation, you might benefit from a consumer credit advocacy firm that can advise on the debt relief options.?

- Debt management plans, which credit counseling firms offer, speed up the time it takes to get out of debt by lowering interest rates, but there are some drawbacks. You will no longer be able to use the credit accounts. You will most likely pay an enrollment fee and monthly fees. These plans do not lower total principal due.

- Debt settlement plans reduce principal balances due. They can sometimes reduce total unsecured debt owed by almost half. But because you do not make payments directly to creditors while you go through this process, delinquencies can appear on your credit report, which lower your credit score. You also may receive calls from creditors. Reputable firms should not charge you a fee until after they have finalized a settlement for you, and should help you through the process.

- Bankruptcy, generally viewed as a last resort, may be helpful for those in very serious debt situations for whom debt relief services cannot be of help. Be sure to discuss with a bankruptcy attorney licensed in your state.

If you cannot wipe the financial slate clean before the start of the New Year, you can feel better knowing that you are on the right track. Keep it up. Do not allow yourself to get so caught up in the holidays that you revert back to bad spending habits. This is the best gift you can give yourself.?

Far from random, evolution follows a predictable genetic pattern

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Evolution, often perceived as a series of random changes, might in fact be driven by a simple and repeated genetic solution to an environmental pressure that a broad range of species happen to share, according to new research.

Princeton University research published in the journal Science suggests that knowledge of a species' genes -- and how certain external conditions affect the proteins encoded by those genes -- could be used to determine a predictable evolutionary pattern driven by outside factors. Scientists could then pinpoint how the diversity of adaptations seen in the natural world developed even in distantly related animals.

"Is evolution predictable? To a surprising extent the answer is yes," said senior researcher Peter Andolfatto, an assistant professor in Princeton's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics. He worked with lead author and postdoctoral research associate Ying Zhen, and graduate students Matthew Aardema and Molly Schumer, all from Princeton's ecology and evolutionary biology department, as well as Edgar Medina, a biological sciences graduate student at the University of the Andes in Colombia.

The researchers carried out a survey of DNA sequences from 29 distantly related insect species, the largest sample of organisms yet examined for a single evolutionary trait. Fourteen of these species have evolved a nearly identical characteristic due to one external influence -- they feed on plants that produce cardenolides, a class of steroid-like cardiotoxins that are a natural defense for plants such as milkweed and dogbane.

Though separated by 300 million years of evolution, these diverse insects -- which include beetles, butterflies and aphids -- experienced changes to a key protein called sodium-potassium adenosine triphosphatase, or the sodium-potassium pump, which regulates a cell's crucial sodium-to-potassium ratio. The protein in these insects eventually evolved a resistance to cardenolides, which usually cripple the protein's ability to "pump" potassium into cells and excess sodium out.

Andolfatto and his co-authors first sequenced and assembled all the expressed genes in the studied species. They used these sequences to predict how the sodium-potassium pump would be encoded in each of the species' genes based on cardenolide exposure.

Scientists using similar techniques could trace protein changes in a species' DNA to understand how many diverse organisms evolved as a result of environmental factors, Andolfatto said. "To apply this approach more generally a scientist would have to know something about the genetic underpinnings of a trait and investigate how that trait evolves in large groups of species facing a common evolutionary problem," Andolfatto said.

"For instance, the sodium-potassium pump also is a candidate gene location related to salinity tolerance," he said. "Looking at changes to this protein in the right organisms could reveal how organisms have or may respond to the increasing salinization of oceans and freshwater habitats."

Jianzhi Zhang, a University of Michigan professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, said that the Princeton-based study shows that certain traits have a limited number of molecular mechanisms, and that numerous, distinct species can share the few mechanisms there are. As a result, it is likely that a cross-section of certain organisms can provide insight into the development of other creatures, he said.

"The finding of parallel evolution in not two, but numerous herbivorous insects increases the significance of the study because such frequent parallelism is extremely unlikely to have happened simply by chance," said Zhang, who is familiar with the study but had no role in it.

"It shows that a common molecular mechanism is used by many different insects to defend themselves against the toxins in their food, suggesting that perhaps the number of potential mechanisms for achieving this goal is very limited," he said. "That many different insects independently evolved the same molecular tricks to defend themselves against the same toxin suggests that studying a small number of well-chosen model organisms can teach us a lot about other species. Yes, evolution is predictable to a certain degree."

Andolfatto and his co-authors examined the sodium-potassium pump protein because of its well-known sensitivity to cardenolides. In order to function properly in a wide variety of physiological contexts, cells must be able to control levels of potassium and sodium. Situated on the cell membrane, the protein generates a desired potassium to sodium ratio by "pumping" three sodium atoms out of the cell for every two potassium atoms it brings in.

Cardenolides disrupt the exchange of potassium and sodium, essentially shutting down the protein, Andolfatto said. The human genome contains four copies of the pump protein, and it is a candidate gene for a number of human genetic disorders, including salt-sensitive hypertension and migraines. In addition, humans have long used low doses of cardenolides medicinally for purposes such as controlling heart arrhythmia and congestive heart failure.

The Princeton researchers used the DNA microarray facility in the University's Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics to sequence the expression of the sodium-potassium pump protein in insect species spanning three orders: butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera); beetles and weevils (Coleoptera); and aphids, bed bugs, milkweed bugs and other sucking insects (Hemiptera).

The researchers found that the genes of cardenolide-resistant insects incorporated various mutations that allowed it to resist the toxin. During the evolutionary timeframe examined, the sodium-potassium pump of insects feeding on dogbane and milkweed underwent 33 mutations at sites known to affect sensitivity to cardenolides. These mutations often involved similar or identical amino-acid changes that reduced susceptibility to the toxin. On the other hand, the sodium-potassium pump mutated just once in insects that do not feed on these plants.

Significantly, the researchers found that multiple gene duplications occurred in the ancestors of several of the resistant species. These insects essentially wound up with one conventional sodium-potassium pump protein and one "experimental" version, Andolfatto said. In these insects, the newer, hardier versions of the sodium-potassium pump are mostly expressed in gut tissue where they are likely needed most.

"These gene duplications are an elegant solution to the problem of adapting to environmental changes," Andolfatto said. "In species with these duplicates, the organism is free to experiment with one copy while keeping the other constant, avoiding the risk that the new version of the protein will not perform its primary job as well."

The researchers' findings unify the generally separate ideas of what predominately drives genetic evolution: protein evolution, the evolution of the elements that control protein expression or gene duplication. This study shows that all three mechanisms can be used to solve the same evolutionary problem, Andolfatto said.

Central to the work is the breadth of species the researchers were able to examine using modern gene sequencing equipment, Andolfatto said.

"Historically, studying genetic evolution at this level has been conducted on just a handful of 'model' organisms such as fruit flies," Andolfatto said. "Modern sequencing methods allowed us to approach evolutionary questions in a different way and come up with more comprehensive answers than had we examined one trait in any one organism.

"The power of what we've done is to survey diverse organisms facing a similar problem and find striking evidence for a limited number of possible solutions," he said. "The fact that many of these solutions are used over and over again by completely unrelated species suggests that the evolutionary path is repeatable and predictable."
