Excitement level high for football at Land O' Lakes

LAND O' LAKES - The new high-tempo Land O' Lakes offense is doing more than testing the fitness of opposing defenses.

The Gators have been moving the ball at will during the summer league, and the defense also appeared to take a major step forward Tuesday when interceptions and deflected passes came in bunches.

Junior Kamal Wells said the excitement level on both sides of the ball is high.

"Everyone's getting the ball, defense is making stops and everything is hyped," Wells said.

Coach Brian Wachtel said his players have picked up the new schemes quickly.

"I've seen a lot of improvement, and I'd say we're becoming more seasoned on offense and defense," Wachtel said. "We had the spring to put the defense in, and the summer has greatly helped us with our understanding of the concepts. The changes offensively, the kids are really picking it up fast. They've done a phenomenal job today, but we've got to keep getting better."

Seahawks looking for new leader

Sunlake has been one of Pasco County's most consistent teams the last three years.

The Seahawks have averaged nine wins per season during that stretch, and did so with three different quarterbacks.

Three years ago it was the hard running and accurate passing of Jacob Jackson. A high-flying attack led by Cameron Stoltz was used in 2011 and a run-heavy offense guided by the speedy Josh Zifer last season.

Senior Esteban LeWallen has taken the majority of first-team snaps during the spring and summer, but coach Bill Browning said junior Dayton Feiden has played well enough to make it a battle for the starting spot.

"I think it's going to go right into the fall before we determine who's the starter," Browning said. "They both have strengths and weaknesses, and we'll have to see where the chips fall."

Browning said either quarterback has the ability to bring balance back to Sunlake's offense, which ran the ball 79 percent of the time last season.

"I try to tweak the offense based on what the quarterback's forte is," Browning said. "We may be more pass mode one year and run mode the next. . I anticipate us being more balanced this year."

Sharks ready for more expectations

A key word for Anclote is expectations.

The Sharks have a new mindset after making their first postseason last fall, but coach Matt Wicks has also made it clear those new standards come with a target.

"Expectations are very high," said Wicks, the only coach in the program's four-year history. "We've got a lot of returning players who want to get back to the playoffs, and we now won't be able to sneak up on anyone."

While managing expectations, Anclote has been searching for a new signal caller after the graduation of John Forgione, the Sharks' starting quarterback since midway through his freshman season.

"Andrew (Janus) hasn't been able to do anything this summer after he broke his leg in our spring game against Springstead, but he's been in the system for going on four years," Wicks said. "He knows the system well. Brandon (Vinkler) is really smart and has been picking things up fast, so we've got some good options."

Vinkler helped lead the Sharks to winning the Weeki Wachee 7-on-7 tournament this past weekend and said his confidence is growing.

"This is the first time I've played with varsity kids, so I'm getting used to things and seeing faster defenses," Vinkler said. "It's tough, but it's getting easier each week."

Bulls preparing to be better

Wiregrass Ranch first-year coach Mike Lawrence said he doesn't know how good his young offense can be, but he is sure the Bulls will put up more than the 61 points scored last fall.

"The pieces are definitely there," said Lawrence, who was the team's offensive coordinator last year. "Here in 7-on-7, without offensive linemen or running the ball, it's never going to be the same. Most of it is making sure timing and spacing on their routes is correct, but we won't know until we put pads back on."

Wiregrass Ranch has been unable to put up much offense the last two seasons, combining for 107 points and an 0-20 record. The Bulls must replace last year's leading receiver Ryan Shea, but return several other offensive threats like quarterback Shane Bucenell, receivers Mark Hutchinson and Jaye Miner and running back John Harris-Scott.

Cobras believe in 7-on-7

Hudson takes the 7-on-7 leagues and tournaments more seriously. Cobras coach Mark Kantor said that during his time coaching Gaither, he noticed Plant took each 7-on-7 opportunity in full and the Panthers have reaped the benefits with state championships.

"We take 7-on-7 seriously," Kantor said. "I've always taken a look at guys I've coached against and there's a dude in south Tampa by the name of Robert Weiner and he's got more rings than I've got in my whole dresser. (Plant) takes it serious down there, and I've talked to Robert and try to take some things from him and the guy has won five titles."

Hudson participated in the Chuck-N-Duck passing tournament at Weeki Wachee High this past weekend and reached the semifinals vs. Anclote, which they lost the game and were not able to complete due to weather. In Hudson's first 7-on-7 game Tuesday vs. Fivay, the Cobras defeated their neighborhood rivals 21-15, and Kantor sees his skill players making great strides this summer.

"We had a really good tournament up in Weeki Wachee," Kantor said. "The kids are starting to mold and really develop. Every day is a chance to make these kids better and our staff is doing a great job of doing that. Staff is coming to work and working hard each day."

Progress seen in young, skill players

River Ridge went through a disappointing 3-7 season in 2012 and also lost some of its top skill players, including quarterback Josh Maisel and two-way standout Brian Clinkscale. Royal Knights coach Ryan Benjamin must now find the athletes to replace a good percentage of the offense.

Benjamin knows his team is going to be young, with the Royal Knights starting 11 underclassmen in the spring game against Fivay, and River Ridge already has players stepping up to fill in for graduated seniors. Sophomore Pat Mathieson is looking like River Ridge's starting quarterback heading into the regular season, and Chris Schwartz, the younger brother of former River Ridge FB Austin Schwartz, has shown promise in the backfield.

"(Chris) is a spitting image of his brother Austin," Benjamin said. "He has a great work ethic and attitude. He's shown to be a great team leader as a sophomore to be. He's in the weight room every single day and he's doing such a great job."

Windows 8 - laptop crashing on sleep - DUMP ATTACHED - PLEASE HELP!!

Hi I have an Acer Aspire 5740 and had dual booted WIn 7 and 8. All worked fine but fo t he past month the laptop goes into sleep then I return to use it and find it switched on after it has rebooted. It seems it is always crashing and restarting. I attach the dump for any help please?

The moves come a month after several businesses pulled their ads from Facebook?amid reports of pages on Facebook?that promoted violence against women.

Facebook?said at the time that it needed to improve its system for flagging and removing content that violated its community standards, which forbid users from posting content about hate-speech, threats and pornography, among other things.

Ads account for roughly 85 percent of revenue at Facebook, the world's largest social network with 1.1 billion users.?Facebook?said the changes would not have a meaningful impact on its business.

On Friday,?Facebook?said it also needed to do more to prevent situations in which ads are displayed alongside material that may not run afoul of its community standards but are deemed controversial nonetheless.

A?Facebook?page for a business that sells adult products, for example, will no longer feature ads. Previously such a page could feature ads along the right-hand side of the page so long as the page did not violate?Facebook's prohibition on depicting nudity.

The move underscores the delicate balance for social media companies, which features a variety of unpredictable and sometimes unsavory content shared by users, but which rely on advertising to underpin their business.

"Our goal is to both preserve the freedoms of sharing on Facebook?but also protect people and brands from certain types of content,"?Facebook?said in a post on its website on Friday.

Facebook?said on Friday that it would expand the scope of pages and groups on its website that should be ad-restricted and promised to remove ads from the flagged areas of the website by the end of the coming week.

Pages and groups that reference violence will also be off limits to ads, the company said. A Facebook?spokeswoman noted that the policy would not apply to the pages of news organizations on?Facebook.

Facebook?said the process of flagging objectionable pages and removing ads would initially be done manually, but that the company will build an automated system to do the job in the coming weeks.

Nanoparticles Help Scientists Tell Left From Right

Have trouble telling left from right? Believe it not, so do molecular scientists. But a new method that amplifies the difference between right-handed and left-handed molecules could make things easier for scientists and lead to the development of new nanomaterials, optical sensors and pharmaceutical drugs.

A team of scientists at the U.S Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory and Ohio University have developed a way to make determining the handedness, or chirality, of molecules simpler.

In biology, left and right molecular designs are crucial. Living things are only made from left-handed molecules. A left-handed molecule of a particular compound could be an effective drug while its right-handed counterpart is completely inactive.

To help determine which is which, scientists used gold-and-silver cubic nanoparticles to amplify the difference between a left-handed molecule's and a right-handed molecule's response to a particular kind of light known as "circularly polarized" light.

Earlier work showed that molecules respond better to light when coupled with metallic nanoparticles. So researchers experimented with different shapes and compositions of nanoparticles to determine which was best suited for reflecting circularly polarized light.

They found that cubes with a gold centers surrounded by a silver shell were not only effective at picking up a chiral optical signal, they could even amplify these signals.

The optical signals of molecules attached to the gold and silver nanocubes were approximately 100 times stronger than their unattached counterparts.

"Our discovery and methods based on this research could be extremely useful for characterization of biomolecular interactions with drugs, probing protein folding and in other application where stereometric properties are important," said Oleg Gang, a researcher at Brookhaven's Center for Functional Nanomaterials.

Researchers also believe that their work could lead to enhanced designs of metamaterials used for things like energy harvesting and optical telecommunications.

US consumer sentiment stays near 6-year high

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A measure of U.S. consumer confidence stayed near a six-year high in June as higher home prices boosted household wealth. The survey shows Americans remain upbeat about the economy, despite wild gyrations in the stock market.

The University of Michigan said Friday that its final reading of consumer sentiment in June was 84.1. That's an improvement from a preliminary reading of 82.7 issued on June 14. And it is just slightly below May's final reading of 84.5, which was the highest since July 2007.

Rising household wealth was the main reason consumers stayed optimistic. Households with income above $75,000, those more likely to own homes and stocks, reported the biggest gain.

Consumers' confidence is closely watched because their spending accounts for 70 percent of economic growth.

Stocks pared steep early morning losses after the report was released. The Dow Jones industrial average, which was down as much as 140 points at one point, rebounded to 53 points lower at midday.

The University of Michigan polls roughly 500 people throughout the month and issues two readings.

The slight improvement from the preliminary survey suggests consumers were unfazed by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's June 19 comments about the Fed's bond purchases. Bernanke said the Fed could start to slow its bond buying by the end of the year and end it next year, if the economy continues to strengthen. The bond purchases have kept long-term interest rates low.

Stocks fell sharply in the days after Bernanke's comments and interest rates jumped. The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage surged this week to a two-year high of 4.46 percent. That's up from 3.93 percent last week and a full point higher than a month ago.

"Consumers remain optimistic despite recent market volatility and a back-up in mortgage rates," said Yelena Shulyatyeva, an economist at BNP Paribas.

Americans seem to agree with the Fed's view that the economy is slowly improving. A measure of their expectations for future growth rose to an eight-month high.

Employers have been adding jobs at stable pace, while the unemployment rate has slowly fallen to a still-high 7.6 percent. Higher home sales and prices have driven a steady housing recovery. And on Tuesday the Conference Board said the improved job market helped lift its survey of consumer confidence to the highest level in 5? years, a point echoed by Friday's Michigan consumer sentiment survey.

"Consumers now believe the recovery has achieved an upward momentum that will not be easily reversed," Richard Curtin, director of the Michigan survey, said.

More Americans said they planned to buy a home, despite rising mortgage rates, according to the Michigan survey. The number of consumers who said it was a bad time to buy a home fell to the fewest in 10 years.

The survey also found that rising mortgage rates and home prices may be spurring more Americans to buy homes, rather than discouraging them. The proportion of Americans who said it is a good time to buy because rates and prices will be higher in the future reached post-recession highs this month.

Living Large in 140 Square Feet

Chris Tack made seven unloading trips to Goodwill before moving into the tiny home he and his wife Malissa designed and built. Constructed on a trailer bed and parked in Snohomish, Washington, the house is more than enough space for them, the couple says. And one advantage of an abode on wheels is that you can always move, says Malissa.

LICHTMAN: That's right. Speaking of consumers and energy and sustainability on the personal level, this serves as a perfect segue, actually, to our Video Pick, which is about a couple in Snohomish, Washington - so outside of Seattle - who have built their own home. But here's the thing.

FLATOW: Yeah.

LICHTMAN: It's really small.

FLATOW: Really small?

LICHTMAN: Really, really small.

FLATOW: How small is it?

(LAUGHTER)

LICHTMAN: It is 140 square feet. So it's about 20 feet long and about seven feet wide, and everything's in it. So you have a sleeping loft. So it's about one-and-a-half stories. The kitchen is underneath that, along with the bathroom. The rest of it is the living room. The workspace folds out. Tables, sort of, go down to the wall, and then can be brought up. And there you have it. It all fits. But there's not a lot of open spaces, as you might imagine.

FLATOW: Yeah. So if you want to - and a couple of live in the house, right?

LICHTMAN: Right. Chris and Malissa Tack are the people who built and designed the place themselves. They're 29 years old, and they said that one of the things that they liked about this - which I think is actually emblematic of this generation - is that they didn't want to have to put down roots in one place. So here's the solution: You build your house on a trailer bed, and then you can take it with you when you move.

FLATOW: You've got the hitch right there.

LICHTMAN: That's right.

FLATOW: And - but there's a - sort of stationary, at the moment, right?

LICHTMAN: Right. So they've got it parked. They're renting land, and they have it parked there. And I think they've been for a while now. And, you know, they had - they rented the land while they built the house and, you know, there are a few, sort of, interesting, neat, little considerations. One thing that they did that I thought was kind of cool was for insulation, they used a sort of natural wall insulation. I had never seen that before. But anyway, you can get all of the nuts and bolts of living and building one of these tiny houses on our website at sciencefriday.com.

LICHTMAN: ...because you're sort of packing in a lot into a small space. So there a lot of windows. One of the things that was really nice about being inside the space is that it was much brighter than almost any space I've been in, because the number of windows per area was huge.

FLATOW: Right. So you don't feel like you're closed in also, right...

LICHTMAN: No. You don't...

FLATOW: ...a tight, little spot.

LICHTMAN: No. You don't feel like you're closed in. And, in fact, this was one of the things that we had asked about. You know, what do you do when...

FLATOW: You want to get away from someone, right?

LICHTMAN: ...when you want to get away from someone? And I think we actually have a little clip of Malissa describing what you do.

MALISSA TACT: You actually open the front door and you walk out.

FLATOW: Pretty simple, huh?

LICHTMAN: Yeah, exactly.

FLATOW: Go outside, get some fresh air.

FLATOW: So they intend to stay with this, and not move it around and just keep where it is.

LICHTMAN: Well, for now.

FLATOW: For now.

LICHTMAN: For now. And they also have a cat, by the way. So it's three living beings in this place.

FLATOW: Right.

LICHTMAN: And this was, I thought, actually, kind of funny, because if you're living in a 140-foot square foot place...

FLATOW: Right.

LICHTMAN: ...the litter box is actually huge in comparison to your home...

FLATOW: That's right. It's a large part of the place.

LICHTMAN: ...the ratio of litter box to home is much larger.

FLATOW: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

LICHTMAN: And so they had this ingenious solution that they designed themselves, which was to sort of quadrant it off under a closet where you can only enter through the bathroom. And it was a great idea that they came up with, because they had to. But, you know, every house should be built in with a litter box home.

FLATOW: Yeah. Of course.

LICHTMAN: You know, it's a great idea.

FLATOW: Even if you don't have a cat. You should...

LICHTMAN: Absolutely.

FLATOW: Yeah.

LICHTMAN: Yeah.

Early brain stimulation may help stroke survivors recover language function

June 27, 2013 ? Non-invasive brain stimulation may help stroke survivors recover speech and language function, according to new research in the American Heart Association journal Stroke.

Between 20 percent to 30 percent of stroke survivors have aphasia, a disorder that affects the ability to grasp language, read, write or speak. It's most often caused by strokes that occur in areas of the brain that control speech and language.

"For decades, skilled speech and language therapy has been the only therapeutic option for stroke survivors with aphasia," said Alexander Thiel, M.D., study lead author and associate professor of neurology and neurosurgery at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. "We are entering exciting times where we might be able in the near future to combine speech and language therapy with non-invasive brain stimulation earlier in the recovery. This could result in earlier and more efficient aphasia recovery and also have an economic impact."

In the small study, researchers treated 24 stroke survivors with several types of aphasia at the rehabilitation hospital Rehanova and the Max-Planck-Institute for neurological research in Cologne, Germany. Thirteen received transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and 11 got sham stimulation.

The TMS device is a handheld magnetic coil that delivers low intensity stimulation and elicits muscle contractions when applied over the motor cortex.

During sham stimulation the coil is placed over the top of the head in the midline where there is a large venous blood vessel and not a language-related brain region. The intensity for stimulation was lower intensity so that participants still had the same sensation on the skin but no effective electrical currents were induced in the brain tissue.

Patients received 20 minutes of TMS or sham stimulation followed by 45 minutes of speech and language therapy for 10 days.

The TMS groups' improvements were on average three times greater than the non-TMS group, researchers said. They used German language aphasia tests, which are similar to those in the United States, to measure language performance of the patients.

"TMS had the biggest impact on improvement in anomia, the inability to name objects, which is one of the most debilitating aphasia symptoms," Thiel said.

Researchers, in essence, shut down the working part of the brain so that the stroke-affected side could relearn language. "This is similar to physical rehabilitation where the unaffected limb is immobilized with a splint so that the patients must use the affected limb during the therapy session," Thiel said.

"We believe brain stimulation should be most effective early, within about five weeks after stroke, because genes controlling the recovery process are active during this time window," he said.

Thiel said the result of this study opens the door to larger, multi-center trials. The NORTHSTAR study has been funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and will be launched at four Canadian sites and one German site later in 2013.

The Walter and Marga Boll and Wolf-Dieter-Heiss Foundations funded the current study.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is suing former MF Global CEO Jon Corzine for failure to supervise at the defunct firm.

In a statement, the regulator said it seeks to ban the former governor of New Jersey from working in the futures industry for his alleged role in the firm's bankruptcy 18 months ago.

The suit also targets the former treasurer of the company, Edith O'Brien, and alleges that MF Global misused funds prior to its collapse. The CFTC is asking for a $100 million penalty against the company.

Senate passes immigration bill

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Senate has passed historic immigration legislation offering the hope of American citizenship to millions, while promising a military-style surge to secure the border.

The vote was 68-32, far more than the majority needed to send the measure to the House. Prospects there are not nearly as good and many conservatives are opposed.

Vice President Joe Biden presided, and senators cast their votes from their desks, both steps reserved for momentous votes.

The bill, a priority for President Barack Obama, would amount to the most sweeping changes in decades to the nation's immigration laws.

Investigator: No sign progressives mistreated

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Treasury Department watchdog who detailed Internal Revenue Service mistreatment of tea party groups seeking tax-exempt status says he has no evidence the IRS also mishandled progressive groups' applications.

In a letter to Congress, the inspector general for tax administration, J. Russell George, acknowledged that the term "Progressives" appeared on a list of terms used by IRS screeners from 2010 to 2012 to look for applicants with potential problems that would merit close scrutiny. But he said there was no evidence the IRS set aside progressive groups' applications because they appeared on that list, which was aimed at finding groups that may have engaged in political activity ? which could affect whether they were granted tax-exempt status.

George said his investigators have "multiple sources of information corroborating," including interviews with IRS employees, emails and other documents, that tea party groups' applications were set aside for close examinations. But he added, "We found no indication in any of these other materials that "Progressives" was a term used to refer cases for scrutiny for political campaign intervention."

George's explanation did not satisfy Rep. Sander Levin of Michigan, top Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee.

At a hearing of that panel Thursday at which IRS chief Danny Werfel was testifying, Levin said he wanted that committee to have George testify at a future session. Levin and other Democrats say George's report last month revealing IRS mistreatment of tea party groups unfairly focused on conservatives and omitted mention of progressives.

"Our committee, in its oversight role, has an obligation to fully understand the manner in which the inspector general conducted his audit, and at what direction," Levin said.

The congressman, to whom George sent his letter, said that applications from progressive groups were sent to a different group of screeners within the IRS and that George failed to investigate that.

Under questioning from Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., Werfel said his own investigation of his agency's behavior had produced no evidence to contradict George's finding that progressive groups' applications were not set aside so their political activities could be examined. But he later said there was "a diversity of political labels" among the groups whose applications were set aside for further review.

Some progressive groups seeking tax-exempt status have complained about facing lengthy delays and detailed questions from the IRS.

It is unclear whether progressive groups faced the same extent of mistreatment as conservative organizations. Dozens of them ran into delays exceeding a year, and many received scores of detailed questions that officials have since said were overly intrusive, including demands for information about their donors.

The back-and-forth came as Werfel answered questions from Congress for the first time since revelations that progressives joined the tea party on a list of groups whose applications for tax-exempt status drew extra scrutiny.

Camp criticized a report that Werfel issued this Monday, six weeks after President Barack Obama named him to head the troubled agency.

Werfel wrote that he found mismanagement but no purposeful wrongdoing at the IRS in a report that also pointed to the officials who have been replaced and other changes he has made. Camp said that conclusion was "incomplete" because Werfel did not interview several former top IRS officials, including former commissioner Douglas Shulman.

Democrats seem determined to shift the focus to this week's disclosure that the term "Progressive" was also on the agency's watch lists.

IRS regulations allow tax-exempt social welfare organizations to engage in some political activity but it cannot be their primary mission. The agency must decide whether each applicant's activities meet those vague guidelines.

The IRS has been under withering fire since May 10, when an agency official acknowledged that it had targeted conservative groups seeking tax-exempt designations for tough examinations. Until then, IRS officials had insisted that conservatives had not been singled out for such treatment.

Some Republicans have suggested that the focus on conservative groups came from the White House or other Obama allies.

There has been no evidence of that so far. Instead, according to investigators and testimony from IRS workers to congressional committees, workers in the agency's Cincinnati office that handled tax-exempt applications developed the lists to help them find groups that merited additional scrutiny.

Obama and members of both parties in Congress have said such targeting is inexcusable. At least five top officials, including former acting Commissioner Steven Miller, have been removed.

TOKYO (AP) ? The world's first space conversation experiment between a robot and humans is ready to be launched.

Developers from the Kirobo project, named after "kibo" or hope in Japanese and "robot," gathered in Tokyo Wednesday to demonstrate the humanoid robot's ability to talk.

"Russia was the first to go outer space, the U.S. was the first to go to the moon, we want Japan to be the first to send a robot-astronaut to space that can communicate with humans," said Yorichika Nishijima, the Kirobo project manager.

The experiment is a collaboration between advertising and PR company Dentsu Inc., the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo, Robo Garage and Toyota Motor Corp.

Tomotaka Takahashi, CEO of Robo Garage Co. and associate professor at the University of Tokyo, said he hopes robots like Kirobo that hold conversations will eventually be used to assist astronauts working in space.

"When people think of robots in outer space, they tend to seek ones that do things physically," said Takahashi. "But I think there is something that could come from focusing on humanoid robots that focus on communication."

Because Kirobo does not need to perform physical activities, it is smaller than most robots that go into space. Kirobo is about 34 centimeters tall (13 inches) and weighs about 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds).

Its land-based counterpart Mirata looks almost identical but is not designed to go into outer space. Instead, it has the ability to learn through the conversations it has.

During the demonstration, Fuminori Kataoka, project general manager from Toyota, asked Kirobo what its dream was.

"I want to create a future where humans and robots can live together and get along," it answered.

Kirobo is scheduled to be launched from the Tanegashima Space Center on August 4, 2013.

Japanese robots Kirobo and Mirata set for launch, literally

Don't get excited about buying the new robots created by Japanese company Dentsu in conjunction with Toyota and the University of Tokyo -- they won't be hitting stores anytime soon. However, do get excited that one of them, namely the white-helmeted droid Kirobo (shown above, left), will actually be launched into orbit as part of a Japan Space Agency mission to the ISS on August 4th. In fact, he and his backup Mirata were endowed with voice recognition, natural language processing, speed synthesis, realistic body language and facial recognition for that very reason. They'll be participating in the "world's first conversational experiment" between people and robots in space, while also mixing it up with kids on earth with educational activities. Hopefully, the astronauts won't give Kirobo any HAL 9000-like control of the station, though the cute 'bots seem malice-free, saying they "wanted to create a future where humans and robots live together and get along." UC Riverside's Yinsheng Wang is the 2013 recipient of the Biemann Medal

RIVERSIDE, Calif. Yinsheng Wang, a professor of chemistry at the University of California, Riverside, has received the Biemann Medal, awarded by the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) to an individual early in his or her career in recognition of significant achievement in basic or applied mass spectrometry.

Wang received the medal and gave an award lecture earlier this month at the annual conference of the ASMS in Minneapolis, Minn. The medal is accompanied by a cash prize of $5,000.

"I feel humbled to be the recipient of this year's Biemann Medal," Wang said. "This is a great recognition of our work by the mass spectrometry community. I appreciate very much the hard work of my graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, without which this would not have been possible."

The first person at UC Riverside to win the medal, Wang focuses his research on discovering the biological consequences of DNA damage and on unraveling mechanisms of action for anti-tumor drugs and environmental toxicants. His laboratory's use and development of mass spectrometry, synthetic organic chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology enable us to understand, at the molecular level, how various DNA damage products are repaired, and how they perturb the efficiency and fidelity of the flow of genetic information during DNA replication and transcription.

Wang is the director of the Environmental Toxicology Graduate Program at UCR. He received his bachelor's degree from Shandong University and master's degree from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He joined the UCR faculty in 2001, after earning his doctoral degree from Washington University in St. Louis.

He is the recipient of a 2005 Research Award from the American Society for Mass Spectrometry, as well as the inaugural Chemical Research in Toxicology Young Investigator Award from the American Chemical Society in 2012. He was named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2012.

The Biemann Medal was established by contributions from students, postdoctoral associates and friends to honor Klaus Biemann, a biochemist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Nominees for the award must be within the first 15 years of receiving the Ph.D. at the time of nomination.

South Africans resigned over 'critical' Mandela

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africans appeared resigned on Monday to the inevitability of one day saying goodbye to former president Nelson Mandela after the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader's condition in hospital deteriorated to critical.

Madiba, as he is affectionately known, is revered among most of South Africa's 53 million people as the architect of the peaceful 1994 transition to multi-racial democracy after three centuries of white domination.

However, with his latest hospitalization - his fourth in six months - a realization has set in that he will not be around for ever.

His deterioration this weekend, two weeks after being admitted in a serious but stable condition with a lung infection, has caused a perceptible switch in mood from prayers for recovery to preparations for a fond farewell.

"If it's his time to go, he can go. I wish God can look after him," said nurse Petunia Mafuyeka, as she headed to work in Johannesburg.

"We will miss him very much. He fought for us to give us freedom. We will remember him every day. When he goes I will cry."

In a statement, President Jacob Zuma's office urged South Africa and the world to pray for Mandela "during this difficult time". But there was some concern among the public about doctors trying to prolong the life of one of the 20th century's most influential figures.

"I'm worried that they're keeping him alive. I feel they should let him go," said Doris Lekalakala, a claims manager. "The man is old. Let nature take its course. He must just rest."

Since stepping down in 1999 after one term as president, Mandela has stayed out of active politics in the continent's biggest and most important economy and his passing is expected to have little political impact.

His last public appearance was waving to fans from the back of a golf cart before the final of the soccer World Cup in Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium in July 2010.

During his retirement, he has divided his time between his home in the wealthy Johannesburg suburb of Houghton, and Qunu, the village in the impoverished Eastern Cape province where he was born.

The public's last glimpse of him was a brief clip aired by state television in April during a visit to his home by Zuma and other senior officials of the ruling African National Congress.

At the time, the 101-year-old liberation movement, which led the fight against white-minority rule, assured the public Mandela was "in good shape", although the footage showed a thin and frail old man sitting expressionless in an armchair.

Uncertainty over the benefits of feeding birds in winter

June 24, 2013 ? Wild bird populations are generally thought to benefit from being given additional food in winter but our understanding of the effects of such food provision is incomplete.

The results of a new study, carried out by researchers at the University of Exeter and the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), has found that feeding wild blue tits in winter resulted in less successful breeding during the following spring.

The research, published in Scientific Reports, revealed that woodland blue tits that were provided with fat balls as a supplementary food during the winter months went on to produce chicks that were smaller, of lower body weight and which had lower survival than the chicks of birds that did not receive any additional food.

Dr Jon Blount from Biosciences at the University of Exeter who led the research said: "Our research questions the benefits of feeding wild birds over winter. Although the precise reasons why fed populations subsequently have reduced reproductive success are unclear, it would be valuable to assess whether birds would benefit from being fed all year round rather than only in winter. More research is needed to determine exactly what level of additional food provisioning, and at what times of year, would truly benefit wild bird populations."

Dr Kate Plummer, lead author of the paper, said: "There could be a number of different explanations for our results. One possibility is that winter feeding may help birds in relatively poor condition to survive and breed. Because these individuals are only capable of raising a small number of chicks, they will reduce our estimation of breeding success within the population. But more research is needed to understand whether winter feeding is contributing to an overall change in the size of bird populations."

It is estimated that around half of UK householders feed birds in their gardens. This equates to around 50-60 thousand tonnes of bird food provisioned each year and contributes to a thriving bird food industry.

Jane Lawler, Marketing Director at Gardman, commented: "As the wider scientific evidence shows, feeding wild birds with appropriate foods delivers a range of positive benefits. A number of unanswered questions remain, however, and this is why we have been supporting this and other research, using the information gained to inform our products and the advice that we provide to our customers."

The three year study was conducted across nine woodland sites in Cornwall. During winter, populations of blue tits were left unfed, given plain fat balls or given fat balls enriched with vitamin E -- a vitamin commonly present in bird food such as nuts and seeds. Nest boxes and bird feeders were distributed around the woodland study sites and reproductive success was investigated by checking the nest boxes in the spring to determine the number of eggs laid and the growth and survival of chicks.

Studies elsewhere have shown that feeding wild birds in winter can have almost immediate benefits for survival and can enhance future breeding success, so the latest results provide important new information and inform the debate around the role that feeding wild birds may play in their population processes. Whether providing food is detrimental or beneficial to wild bird populations, it is clear that more research is needed to better understand its effects.

The study was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), the Royal Society, Gardman Ltd and the BTO.

This weekend the moon reaches its full phase while also reaching the nearest-Earth position of its orbit, creating views of a 'supermoon.' It's a rare astronomical treat.

The result: a bigger, brighter full moon than we?re accustomed to.

So you might want to grab another summer treat (ice cream? strawberries?) and gaze outward or upward to take in the view.

When is best?

One answer is: whenever a clear sky gives you an opening and, of course, the moon is out. The moon is at its fullest on Sunday, but Saturday or Monday or even Tuesday will also offer close-to-full moons.

An ideal time for viewing can be around moonrise, when a view juxtaposed against the horizon can make the moon look bigger and more colorful (an optical illusion caused by Earth?s atmosphere).

Moonrise times this weekend vary across the country and around the world. But here are some reference points that may help.

On Saturday in the US, many cities will see the moon come up around 8 p.m. local time. In some places it?s a little before 8: Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Washington. In some places it?s a little after: Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis, Seattle. You can look up exact times for your location at the US Naval Observatory website.

Around the rest of the world, many major cities have similar moonrise times, but some come as much as a couple of hours earlier (notably in the Southern hemisphere) or after 9 p.m. (for some northerly cities).

For Sunday, you can add about 50 minutes to Saturday?s times. Or again, for precise times you can check in with the US Naval Observatory.

Celebrity chef Paula Deen to appear on TV's 'Today' after no-show

(Reuters) - American celebrity chef Paula Deen, who was dropped by TV's Food Network after she admitted in a lawsuit that she used a racial slur in the past, will appear on NBC-TV's "Today" show on Wednesday after canceling a scheduled interview last week.

The program's anchor, Matt Lauer, said on Monday's show that Deen "told us she will be here this time."

Deen, who withdrew from an interview on June 21, tweeted, "See you Wednesday, I am so glad Matt, Al and my friends at @TodayShow are bringing me back."

The program did not say if Deen would address the controversy.

Deen, 66, apologized in videos posted online for using a racial slur, but Food Network later said it would not renew the Southern chef's contract when it expired at the end of June.

The controversy surrounding Deen began last week when a deposition taken as part of a lawsuit was released in which Deen, who is white, was asked if she had used the "N-word," and responded, "Yes, of course.

Deen, who has built a business empire based on high-calorie and fried Southern food, with cookbooks, restaurants and kitchen supplies, made the comments in a deposition related to a racial and sexual discrimination lawsuit filed by a former employee.

The former employee of Paula Deen Enterprises, Lisa Jackson, is suing Deen and her brother, Earl "Bubba" Hiers, over allegations that while discussing plans for Hiers' 2007 wedding, Deen said she wanted a "true southern plantation-style wedding."

Jackson said that Deen used the slur in the discussion describing how she wanted an all-black wait staff for the party dressed in "long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around," she said, according to the lawsuit.

The Food Network is owned by Scripps Network Interactive Inc.

Ken Duke wins Travelers Championship in playoff

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) ? Journeyman Ken Duke made a 2? foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole Sunday to beat Chris Stroud at the Travelers Championship to win his first ever PGA Tour event.

Stroud had chipped in from 51 feet on the 18th hole to force the playoff.

But the 44-year-old Duke made the better approach shot on the second extra hole, bouncing his ball in front of the flag and rolling it close.

Duke wouldn't have been there at all had luck not intervened on the 10th hole, when his ball ricocheted off a tree and onto the green to about 5 feet from the pin, allowing him to make birdie.

Canadian Graham DeLaet finished a stroke back in third place. Bubba Watson finished fourth, two-shots behind, after making a six on the par-3 16th hole.
