Pujols officially a member of the Angels

NEW YORK (AP) -
Albert Pujols officially joined the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday when Major League Baseball and the players' association confirmed the terms of the first baseman's 10-year contract and agreed its guaranteed value is $240 million.
The deal was reached four weeks earlier on the final day of the winter meetings and took nearly a month to complete. There are three separate agreements.
The team and Pujols will enter a 10-year, personal-services agreement following the playing contract's expiration or Pujols' retirement, whichever is later, a deal that will pay $1 million annually. But because it is contingent on Pujols actually working for the team, it is not considered guaranteed money for the purposes of baseball's luxury tax.
High-payroll teams such as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are likely to examine that structure closely and may emulate it in future agreements.
There also is a marketing agreement that will pay Pujols for milestone accomplishments. The player will receive $3 million for 3,000 hits and $7 million for a record 763rd home run. He currently has 2,073 hits and 763 home runs.
Including all three agreements, Pujols could make up to $265.75 million over 20 years. That includes $875,000 in possible award bonuses each year for accomplishments such as Most Valuable Player, World Series and league championship series MVP, Gold Glove and Silver Slugger, and making the All-Star team.
Like C.J. Wilson's $77.5 million, five-year contract, which also was agreed to Dec. 8, Pujols' deal is heavily backloaded. His 2012 salary will be $12 million, down from the $16 million he made last year in the option year of his contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Pujols salary increases to $16 million in 2013 and $23 million in 2014, then rises $1 million annually until he makes $30 million in 2021, when he will be 41.

Apple's legal team gets new ammunition with patent on original Apple iPhone feature
Apple's legal team just received some new ammunition against unlicensed patent users as the USPTO on Wednesday issued a series of patents to the Cupertino based firm. Among the patents issued was one that was filed by Apple for the use of finger gestures on the original Apple iPhone as a replacement for buttons and a stylus. Apple notes that the use of a finger that could be tracked on the touchscreen of a portable multifunction device could help in displaying and managing lists.
Apple's patent filing mentions how some mobile communications devices can end up being swamped by buttons, or manufactured with buttons that control a number of different functions, or controlled with the use of a complex menu system. Apple noted that the use of these tools could result in the user having to memorize certain key sequences in order to store or retrieve information. In its filing, the tech giant also notes that some portable devices use a stylus to manage a list. But the problem with that is because the screen is designed to use the pinpoint edge of the stylus, it won't work with a thicker fingertip.

Another patent awarded to Apple, 8,090,767, covers how the portable hard drive capabilities of the Apple iPod Touch was eventually carried over to the Apple iPhone. The latter did not have the functionality of being used as a portable hard drive from the get go, which is something that the iPod Touch was capable of almost immediately upon its launch.

Ecuador court upholds ruling against Chevron (AP)
QUITO, Ecuador ? An appeals court in Ecuador upheld an $18 billion ruling against Chevron Corp. on Tuesday for oil pollution in the Amazon rain forest more than two decades ago.
The ruling confirmed a February judgment in the case. The Ecuadorean plaintiffs said in a statement that the decision is based on scientific evidence presented at trial proving that waste had poisoned the water supply.
"The appellate court relied on a record that proved that Chevron has violated the rights of the communities where it operates," the plaintiffs said in the emailed statement.
The lawsuit deals with pollution of the rain forest by energy company Texaco, which Chevron bought in 2001.
Chevron denounced the appeals court's decision and said it will continue to seek recourse in other courts outside Ecuador.
"Today's decision is another glaring example of the politicization and corruption of Ecuador's judiciary that has plagued this fraudulent case from the start," Chevron said in a statement.
The San Ramon, California-based company has previously alleged fraud in the lawsuit. The plaintiffs have also accused Chevron of defrauding the Ecuadorean court to hide the scale of the oil contamination.
By the time of last year's judgment, the case had been winding its way through U.S. and Ecuadorean courts for more than 17 years.
The suit was originally filed in a New York federal court in 1993 against Texaco and dismissed three years later after the oil company argued that Ecuador was the proper venue to hear the case. The suit was refiled in Ecuador in 2003.
Though it had only 47 named plaintiffs, the lawsuit sought damages on behalf of 30,000 people for environmental contamination and illnesses that allegedly resulted from Texaco's operation of an oil consortium from 1972 to 1990 in the rain forest.
