NuVo P200 Wireless Player

NuVo's new Wireless Audio System delivers streaming audio anywhere in your home?even to multiple rooms simultaneously. The P200 ($599 list), the company's wireless stereo amplifier and media hub, supports dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi and MIMO for truly reliable performance, and is capable of transmitting up to 16 simultaneous streams at 600Kbps each. It's also a stereo amplifier, giving you the ability to hook up any pair of passive speakers that could very well sound much better than any AirPlay or Bluetooth speaker.

Used as intended?in multiple rooms, with?the GW100 Gateway (which is required for wireless use),?multiple P200s, and multiple sets of speakers?the whole system is very expensive for the average music listener, and it has a few issues as well. But if you're an audio component fan interested in top-quality wireless streaming throughout your home, and you have the means, read on.

Design, Amplifier, and Main Setup
The NuVo P200 measures 1.65 by 9.02 by 5.0 inches (HWD) and weighs 2.5 pounds. It's made entirely of black plastic, with a vertically curved edge on one side and a horizontally curved edge on the other. The front panel is clean save for four capacitive buttons, which control volume, muting, and Bluetooth functions, plus a combination power and status LED. The back panel houses standard-size 3.5mm input and output jacks, a 3.5mm setup mic port that the manual says is for "future use" only, and four gold 5-way binding posts for connecting speakers. There are also USB 2.0 and Ethernet ports, plus a hardware power switch that, thankfully, doesn't send a loud thump through your speakers when you switch it on.

Inside is a 60-watt-per-channel stereo amplifier that works with 8 ohm and 4 ohm passive speakers. There's Audyssey-powered dynamic volume processing onboard for balancing day and night listening at lower levels, as well as bass and treble adjustments with 12 dB of range in either direction. I tested the P200 with a pair of Klipsch HD Theater 600 satellites and their companion 100-watt, 8-inch powered subwoofer. I hooked up the satellites to the P200 via its five-way binding posts, and then used a 6-foot stereo Y-cable (which is not included) to connect the stereo 3.5mm mini-jack line out on the P200 to the pair of stereo RCA inputs on the powered subwoofer.

The setup process is a little confusing. First, you hook up your speakers, plug the P200 into the wall, download the NuVo Player iOS or Android app on your mobile device, and follow the on-screen instructions. From the app, you can begin setup of a new system or join an existing system you're expanding.

Unfortunately, while the P200 supports Wi-Fi, you need the $199 NuVo GW100 Gateway in order to use the P200 wirelessly. Otherwise, you must use the included Ethernet port and connect it to your router. I tested the P200 with the GW100, which came with no instructions. Basically, you just connect the main port (not one of the four LAN ports) to an existing free port on your router with the included Ethernet cable. The app found it immediately. Next, I powered on the P200, waited for the solid green LED light indicating ready status, and then tapped Next in the app. Then I paired the P200 with the GW100 by holding down the Volume Up and Mute buttons as indicated. From there, I was off and running.

Sound Quality and Music Source Setup
As a general rule, sound quality from the built-in amplifier was uniformly excellent, with a clear soundstage and plenty of gain. I wouldn't have any reservations about powering a full-range pair of floorstanding speakers with the P200. That said, audiophiles may wish to bypass the P200's internal amp and employ the line out for use with an external integrated amplifier or preamp/amp combo. Even better, I didn't experience any audio dropouts while sharing music from a variety of sources, even on our extremely saturated PCMag Labs Wi-Fi networks.NuVo P200 Back

The real purpose of the NuVo system is to enable multi-room wireless streaming, and with multiple sources of music. For that, you may find that a single P200 isn't enough; you can put one in each room, along with an appropriately sized set of speakers, and then control the whole shebang using the app's visual interface. This is the kind of setup where the NuVo system excels, thanks to its reliable wireless performance.

(AP) ? Former Atlanta Braves star center fielder Andruw Jones was free on bond after being arrested in suburban Atlanta early Tuesday on a battery charge, according to jail records.

Around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a call for a domestic dispute between Jones and his wife in Duluth.

Gwinnett County Detention Center records say Jones was booked into the jail around 3:45 a.m. and had been released on $2,400 bond by 11 a.m.

Once one of the premier players in the big leagues, Jones broke into the majors with the Atlanta Braves in 1996 and won 10 consecutive Gold Gloves from 1998-07 as their center fielder. He has 434 career home runs over the span of 17 seasons in the majors.

Jones earlier this month signed a $3.5 million, one-year contract with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of Japan's Pacific League.

The ONE Retail Business That's Doing Well For Christmas ? Adask's ...

merry christmas from 1974

Merry Christmas from 1974?Ain?t That America! ?(Photo credit: deflam)

Firearm Sales . . . especially the sale of ?black rifles? (military-style, semi-automatics like the AR-15).

It?s still possible that President Obama will try to ?do something? about gun control by means of Executive Order?but it?s not likely. ?Unless there?s another school shooting in the next few weeks, I doubt that Congress will implement any substantial gun control legislation in the foreseeable future.

The Democrats implemented gun control in A.D. 1994 and lost control of the Congress in the A.D. 1996 elections. ?They haven?t forgotten that lesson. ?The Republicans will openly resist gun control legislation; the Democrats will try to duck the issue. ?The probability of significant federal gun control legislation is small.

Those of you who don?t like the 2nd Amendment might just as well get used to our right to keep and bear arms?or start steppin? towards another country like England or Australia where guns are controlled to the point that they?re almost impossible for law-abiding people to own.

This is The United States of America and We the People are going to keep our firearms.

Here?s a 6:56 video that shows how one gun store has been nearly cleaned out by purchases of ?black-rifles,? high-capacity magazines and ammunition in just the past few days. ?I see huge implications.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwO51avbXh8

Here?s a little article about another business whose sales soared 500% in the last few days: ?the manufacture of bulletproof children?s backpacks and children?s body armor: ?http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/12/19/bulletproof-backpacks-kids-body-armor-in-demand-following-connecticut-school/

I?m sure that a lot people in this country and foreign countries will watch that video about firearms sales and read the article about children?s body armor and shake their heads in disbelief and contempt. ?They are probably asking, What kind of country is so crazy about firearms that they even provide body armor for children?

I understand their point of view, but I not only disagree with that assessment, I take pride in the previous video and article.

For me, the sudden rise in sales of military-style firearms and body armor for kids only signals that while Americans may be ignorant and self-indulgent?while we?ve played the fool for the past half century and may soon have to pay the fool?s price as consequence of our previous economic stupidities? We are the People of The United States of America. ?And that?s sayin? somthin?. ?We may bend, but we don?t break.

Thomas Jefferson once observed,

?When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.?

Americans have been afraid of our government for a generation or more. ?That fear paralleled a growing police state and rising tyranny. ?But the previous video about the sudden sale of ?black rifles? and the article about children?s body armor is evidence that we don?t depend on government. ?We don?t need you, Obama. ?We can protect our children on our own. . . . ?More, we don?t fear our government. ?We are gearing up (if necessary) for a fight the government can?t possibly win.

For me, that video on firearms sales and the article on child body armor signals a turning point: we?re overcoming our fear of government. ?More, I think that turning point ought to scare the hell out every president, congressman, senator, judge and bureaucrat. ?I think our government is beginning to fear the People.

And I say Hooray!

I say that?s a first step back towards Liberty!

We are the People of The United States of America. ?We may bend, but we don?t break.

We don?t care what the collectivists think. ?We don?t care what the rest of the world thinks. ?We?re going to keep our firearms. ?

Get used to it.

Snowboarder dies in avalanche at Tahoe-area resort

(AP) ? A 49-year-old California man died Monday after being buried in an avalanche while snowboarding at a Sierra ski resort, one of several avalanche-related emergencies in the Lake Tahoe area after recent storms dumped up to 3 feet of fresh snow.

Donner Ski Ranch, about 90 miles northeast of Sacramento, closed as rescue teams began their search.

The Nevada County Sheriff's Department identified the man as Steven Mark Anderson of Hirschdale, an unincorporated community outside Truckee, after notifying his brother.

The sheriff's department received a call about the missing man at noon Monday, nearly three hours after the avalanche. Deputy David Lade said it took that long for Anderson's friends to determine he was missing. The friends had not been skiing as a group, but rather went their own way in the morning, Lade said.

"They spent a lot of time trying to locate him," he said.

A search dog found the man's body about 1:30 p.m. under 2 to 3 feet of snow at the base of the avalanche. Lade said the wind had blown snow to depths to 7 feet or more where the man was snowboarding, which was inside the ski area's boundaries near the main lodge.

Anderson was believed to be the only person caught in the slide, Lade said.

Tahoe-area ski resorts received at least 3 feet of snow in a wind-whipped series of storms from Friday through Sunday, leading to perilous conditions even within ski area boundaries.

"With the extremely heavy snowfall we've gotten over the last three days and the conditions prior to that, it's prime avalanche conditions," Lade said.

Two neighboring ski resorts, Squaw Valley USA and Alpine Meadows, also reported dangerous avalanches. A veteran ski patroller at Alpine Meadows was taken Monday to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno after being buried in a slide that had been intentionally set with an explosive device.

"The charge triggered the avalanche, which broke much higher and wider on the slope than previously observed in past snow safety missions," the resort said in a statement.

The patroller, who had 28 years of experience at the resort, was uncovered within eight minutes. Resort spokeswoman Amelia Richmond said she could not release his condition, and the hospital did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

The ski patrol team was doing avalanche control in Sherwood Bowl, which is within the boundaries on the back side of resort.

On Sunday, two skiers at Squaw Valley ? a 39-year-old woman and 16-year-old boy ? were treated for non-life threatening injuries after they were swept up in an avalanche, although neither had been buried.

All the promises we make ? activists suggest changes to military ...

Ceremony of taking the oath (RIA Novosti / Valery Titievsky)

Russia?s Public Chamber ? a board of human rights activists and advisers that works closely with the authorities ? has suggested changing the military oath of enlistment, replacing the word ?swear? with the word ?promise?.

The proposal was made so that the ritual does not contradict the religious views and ethnic particularities of a significant number of military servicemen, reports the Izvestia daily quoting the Public Chamber?s official recommendations to the Parliament, Presidential Administration and the Defense Ministry.

The recommendations apparently refer to the Gospel which forbids Christians to both break their oaths and to swear by anything.

The authors of the proposal claim that something similar existed in Tsarist Russia where Russian Orthodox Christians could use the phrases ?I promise? or ?I swear by God? in the official oaths if they wanted to.

The Defense Ministry said it is ready to change the regulations if Parliament passes the corresponding amendments to the Law on Military Service.

The current Russian oath of enlistment was adopted in 1998 as part of the Federal Law on Military Service. Its text is universal for all citizens.

Russian military bosses are currently attempting to re-introduce the institute of military priests or chaplains in the Forces. The initiative was first supported by then-President Dmitry Medvedev in July 2009 at a meeting with the leaders of Russia?s main religions. In August 2010 a special department for work with the religions was set up in the Defense Ministry and its newly appointed head estimated the share of religious servicemen in the military forces as about 63 percent, most of them Christians.

The department?s work resulted in the forces got the first military priests, appointed personally by the Defense Minister and the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church in 2011.

Waterdown's St. Thomas School home to new Parenting and Family ...

By Kathy Yanchus ? REVIEW STAFF

A new Parenting and Family Literacy Centre will open in January at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Elementary School in Waterdown.

The announcement was made at the Dec. 18 meeting of the Religion, Family Life and Instructional Services committee of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board.

In October, the Ministry of Education announced the opening of 17 new centres. After consideration of community needs and current available resources, the board submitted their choice to the Ministry for the Waterdown school site, which was approved last month.

Parent and Family Literacy Centres prepare children for the start of school and encourage families to participate in child learning by helping children build essential literacy and numeracy skills, familiarize children and families with school routines and give children and families an opportunity to spend time with other families within the Catholic community.

Centres are open mornings for 20 hours per week and there is no cost and no pre-registration.

The HWCDSB has five other centres located at Our Lady of Lourdes, St. James the Apostle,? St. Kateri Tekakwitha, St. Lawrence and St. Margaret Mary Catholic elementary schools.
