Uggla, Bourn go deep, Braves beats Cardinals 5-4

ATLANTA (AP) ? Two big swings and one last 98-mph fastball left the Atlanta Braves with a giant sigh of relief.

Dan Uggla hit a three-run homer and Michael Bourn also went deep Tuesday night, leading the Braves to a 5-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals that snapped an eight-game losing streak ? Atlanta's longest in more than two years.

"This is not an indication of what's going to happen the next day or the next week or the next month," Uggla said. "But it definitely snaps the feeling of, 'Aww, man, are we ever going to win again?'"

Bourn led off the bottom of the first with his fifth homer of the season, tying a career high. Uggla made it 4-0 in the third, sending one into the seats in left-center. The Cardinals closed within a run in the seventh, but Eric O'Flaherty and Craig Kimbrel each worked one perfect with two strikeouts to preserve the win.

Kimbrel earned his 14th save in 15 chances, ending the game by fanning Matt Holliday on a fastball that clocked 98 mph. The right-hander pumped his fist and slapped hands with his teammates, everyone looking as though a weight had been lifted.

"Everyone knows how bad we've been scuffling," Uggla said. "When you get that first one, it eases the tension, eases the pressure. We know what it feels like to win again. It was obviously a big night for us."

Randall Delgado (3-5) worked into the sixth, allowing three runs, and the Cardinals got closer in the seventh on Yadier Molina's third RBI of the night, a run-scoring single. He went 4-for-4, including a solo homer.

Moline liked the previous day better, when he had just one hit but the Cardinals won.

"I feel good," said Molina, who is hitting .560 (14-for-25) with three homers and 11 RBIs during a six-game hitting streak. "At the same time, I'd trade my 1-for-5 from last night and the win and not take the 4-for- 4 and the loss."

Jake Westbrook (4-4) struggled to keep his sinker down and lasted only five innings.

"That's a couple of games in a row I've put us in a hole," he said. "I've got to do a better job. With the sinker that I have, that should keep the ball in the yard."

The Braves shook things up before the game, sending reliever Kris Medlen to the minors so he could stretch out his arm and return to the big leagues as a starter. He was replaced on the roster by speedy outfielder Jose Constanza, who started in left and batted ninth ? ahead of Delgado ? as manager Fredi Gonzalez looked for ways to shake the team out of its worst slump since a nine-game winless stretch in April 2010.

"Why not?" Gonzalez said.

The unusual lineup paid off in the fifth, when Constanza led off with a single, moved to second on Westbrook's errant throw to first, raced to third on Bourn's deep flyout and sped home on Westbrook's wild pitch. That gave the Braves a 5-2 lead, which turned out to be just enough to hold off the Cardinals.

"He brings the team a little energy," Gonzalez said of Constanza, who also sparked the Braves last season after being called up.

Molina had his third four-hit game of the season. He began the comeback with a run-scoring single in the fourth, when St. Louis scored twice to halve Atlanta's lead to 4-2. Molina followed in the sixth with his eighth homer, a one-out shot into the left-field seats. Then, in the seventh, he came through again with an RBI single to right off Jonny Venters, making it a one-run game.

But Venters, whose struggles have apparently cost him his role as the eighth-inning setup man to Kimbrel, escaped the jam by striking out Matt Adams with runners at first and third.

"Jonny made some strides," Gonzalez said. "He got them hitting ground balls. Now we've got to work on getting them to hit ground balls at somebody."

Westbrook gave up only five hits, but the long ball sent him to his fourth straight start without a win. Bourn drove a 2-2 pitch into the seats to start the Atlanta first, tying the career high for homers that he set with Houston in 2008. There's plenty of time to take down that mark, with four months left in the season.

"I'm not trying to hit home runs," Bourn said. "They just come when they come."

Bourn took the more customary leadoff role in the third, working Westbrook for a one-out walk. Martin Prado singled on a hit-and-run and Brian McCann grounded out before Uggla came through with his eighth homer.

Notes: The Cardinals outhit the Braves 10-5. ... Gonzalez didn't say who Medlen will replace in the rotation once he returns from Triple-A Gwinnett, but left-hander Mike Minor (2-4, 6.98 ERA) is the most likely candidate to get bumped. ... Atlanta also snapped a streak of four straight games giving up at least seven runs. ... Skip Schumaker's single in the fifth extended his hitting streak to seven games.

Back to the Future? The Last 10 Years of the Fitness Industry ? Ian ...

In this post I thought I would review the fitness industry?s evolution. Now from a historical standpoint I have been immersed in? fitness and nutrition for over a decade. With a background in both commercial fitness and small start ups and have a unique insight in to both ends of the market. As tradition dictates we tend to follow American trends in the UK- London first and the rest of the country a couple of years later.

Personal training was a lot smaller 10 years ago. In fact most gyms had one or two guys who pretty much had the run of the place. No competition ment a steady stream of clients. These are a lot of the guys who we see as industry leaders now. Make no mistake- these guys may not be the best technically, they got lucky and were on the boat first. The one?s still working are probably as smarter businessmen as they are trainers and they have had to adapt to a changing more educated customer as well as competition.

Around the year 2000 there was a big influence of rehab based training and the start of what is considered ?functional? training. This led to a more cerebral product being sold to the consumer. Trainers no longer did bodybuilding programmes, they wanted to explore the inner workings of your torso, cardiovascular exercise became potentially fatal for your lower back and all of a sudden lying on your back became the new standing up as you try to activate your ?inner unit.? This was a result of the synergy of physiotherapists becoming more involved in the training process post injury. Now, not to discredit the therapy fields, these approaches where designed for injured people by people who work with injured people. The kid glove approach would suit firstly those who needed it and secondly, those who didnt want to work that hard.

Pilates started to rise in popularity, this was great for the functional rehab guys. Clinical pilates remained true to it?s ideals- posture correction and the development of a strong mobile body. Pilates though started to morph in to what some will consider an expensive ?abs? class. These group session promise all the ideals of pilates but cannot deliver the personalisation. As posture is a personal thing it leaves pilates as a contentious form of training between purists and commercial forces and a pack them high class mentality.

Also from a class perspective ten years ago salsa, yoga?and step aerobics ruled the roost. In the present day Zumba get?s more press than anything else- these is effectively latin dance and is basically dance aerobics. Spinning, yoga, circuit training and combat based training such as boxercise?are still popular- reason being that if done well they work for enhancing ?conditioning.? It shows that if done well classes that get people the results that they want will be successful. It also shows that creating a social friendly and fun class builds adherence- regardless of the results (work out which one I am alluding to there- if you know me then you won?t need to guess).

The rise in Bootcamps is effectively the revival of circuit training. The reasons for this rise are also commercial- more for the trainer than anything else. With zero facility costs they are easy to setup and get going. Again these services can not be personalised for the individual and are a group exercise class. It will not make me popular in the fitness industry for saying this but this is fast food fitness to maximize profit for the trainer- most fitness ?marketeers? even suggest rebranding these?classes as ?fitness camps.? A smart move perhaps? but if you put lipstick on a pig it?s still a pig. That said great trainers are great trainers and if the groups are small enough and inclusive for a range of fitness levels then they will continue to grow.

As personal training became more popular ?functional? training became popular. Functional was a term used to represent training that translated to every day use. Vanity went out the window (perhaps for the first time) and training to help what you do every day became popular.?I always think this is a bizarre concept it suggested that any other training was non-functional. Even to a point that cycling was non-functional unless you where a cyclist, running was non-functional, unless of course you where running a marathon and having big shoulders was non-functional? looked good but definetly non-functional.

This was aslo around the rise of sport specific training and the influence of training athletes. As a lot of training filters through from elite sport, if performance is hindered then people get sacked. Functional training in this sense now had to translate to direct improvements. Balancing, bosu boards and vibration plates grew in popularity, commercial health and fitness followed the craze. High end strength and conditioning though realised pretty quickly that this approach didn?t cut it. Old school methods individualized to the athlete worked, the smart guys assessed and took what they needed but barbells and dumbbells didn?t go away, commercial fitness though still has not caught up.

Athlete based training has started to shape commercial health and fitness. Why? It gets results simply, the customer is more demanding because they are more educated about methods of training and can demand perfection. Fitness professionals have become more widely read and in some cases better educated than they where 10 years ago- they two are not necessarily inclusive.

In the next post I will review where I think the next 10 years will take us?

Jessica Simpson shares first photos of baby

People

Jessica Simpson and Maxwell

By Ree Hines

Just weeks after giving birth to her first child, entertainer-turned-entrepreneur-turned-new-mom Jessica Simpson is giving the world its first glimpse of her baby girl.

Simpson, who reportedly earned $850,000 in an exclusive photo deal with People magazine, spoke to the publication and can be seen cuddling daughter Maxwell Drew Johnson on the cover of the new issue.

"She's on cloud nine," People's assistant managing editor, Kate Coyne, revealed during a Wednesday morning visit to TODAY. "She's really at peace. She's loving motherhood. There have been really no major bumps in the road. This is everything she dreamed it would be."

In fact, according to Coyne, Simpson's so happy that despite having a deal with Weight Watchers in the works, she isn't even worried about her post-baby body.

"She doesn't care what her hair looks like, what her gut looks like," Coyne insisted. "She is really content just to be with her little girl."

As for that Weight Watchers arrangement, that will have to wait.

"She'll still has a few weeks to go before she is able to embark on anything like that," Coyne said. "But she has every confidence in the world that she'll get back to that when it's time. Right now, that's not her focus. ? She's in such a blissful place right now that I'm sure if the question was put to her 'Exactly how many pounds do have to lose?' she'd have no idea. She's too happy to even think about a scale."

Right now, Maxwell is the focus. And for those still wondering how Simpson's bundle of joy ended up with that name, Coyne covered that as well.

"That is her (fianc? Eric Johnson's) mother's maiden name," she explained. "It's her fianc?'s middle name as well, so it's rooted in family history and they just loved it very early on."

And, of course, they love the little girl now carrying that name.

"We stare at her all the time," Simpson told People. "We can't get enough!"

The new issue of People hits newsstands Friday.

Do you think Maxwell looks like mom? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Column: Winning's grand, entertaining is enough - NewsOn6.com ...

By JIM LITKE
AP Sports Columnist

CHICAGO (AP) - The Cubs skulked back into town with their tails between their legs and plenty to answer for.

Then Monday dawned hot and hazy and by mid-afternoon, the sun was shining, the cold beer was flowing, the wind was blowing out and a fleet of baseballs hitched a ride on the jetstream over the walls at Wrigley Field. By the time the accounting was done, the Cubs had half of the eight home runs and an 11-7 win over the equally hapless Padres.

Throw in a pre-game flight by the eagle Challenger and a seventh-inning rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" by actor Brian Dennehy - in town starring in the play, "The Iceman Cometh" - and it was entertaining enough to send fans out the door wondering where the party was relocating and exactly what they were so upset about in the first place.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum wasn't about to remind them.

"Let's not kid yourself. You lose 12 in a row, you finally win. It's a big relief," he said afterward

Just don't count on celebrating for long. Even in bad years, the Cubs usually don't swoon until June. This year they couldn't even make it to Memorial Day. At this rate, they could be mathematically eliminated by the Fourth of July.

The last six of the Cubs' dozen straight losses came during a seven-day road trip at NL Central rivals Houston and Pittsburgh, two of the only half-dozen or so teams Chicago actually has a chance against. It was like being told to bring back dinner and spending all night at the bar instead, then returning empty-handed and praying fans hadn't changed the locks on the gates at Wrigley Field.

"Patience is something a lot of fans don't have," Sveum had said Sunday in Pittsburgh.

Yet he marveled the way Cubs fans had stuck by his team thus far.

"We all understand -- I'm a huge football fan and I don't understand the Oakland Raiders losing every game. That's the way it is."

In Chicago, maybe.

Even so, Theo Epstein wasn't inclined to press his luck. His title with the Cubs is president of baseball operations, but Chicagoans think of Epstein as the boy genius-general manager who ended the Red Sox' decades-long World Series drought and was brought to town to repeat the trick here. Never mind that he preached patience upon his arrival last October and despite his best efforts, still has only two everyday ballplayers - Starlin Castro and David DeJesus - who could start for most clubs, a barely adequate rotation and a mess in the bullpen.

Even Epstein made it sound like he didn't sign on for this.

"I think we're clearly better than this ... on both fronts, short- and long-term, there's work to do," he said at a hastily arranged news conference.

Unfortunately, though beyond "start scrapping and keep grinding for pride," Epstein was short on specifics on how to improve things over the short term.

"Long term," he added, not much more optimistic, "it underscores the magnitude of the job here and sort of how far we need to go to get where we want to be."

At a century and still counting, Cub fans are either the dopiest of most patient bunch in sports. And over the course of all that losing, they've learned to savor the distractions that are often more interesting than anything the team has been able to cobble together on the field. That's why they happily blame black cats, real goats and imaginary scapegoats like Steve Bartman for the ballclub's unending run of futility.

Winning is great, but in these parts entertaining is still good enough.

Last week's brouhaha was over whether Joe Ricketts, the conservative patriarch of TD Ameritrade and the family that owns the Cubs, was really planning to finance a nasty political attack campaign against President Barack Obama - and whether that would make it harder for the Cubs to gain concessions to modify Wrigley Field from the city's staunchly Democratic mayor, Rahm Emanuel, and the city council.

The week before that, it was the nostalgia kicked up by the retirement of one-time pitching phenom Kerry Wood and an essay in The Wall Street Journal calling for the destruction of Wrigley Field, suggesting the aging shrine was actually the reason for all that losing:

"Destroy it. Annihilate it. Collapse it with the sort of charges that put the Sands Hotel out of its misery in Vegas. Implosion or explosion, get rid of it. That pile of quaintness has to go. ... When a house is haunted, you don't put in a new scoreboard, add ivy, get better food or bigger beers_you move!"

Sounding more like a fan than the Cubs left-fielder, Alfonso Soriano considered the option for the briefest of moments.

"Leave this place? No, never," he said after going 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs. "You saw how much it was jumping when we got it going. Let's see what can happen now. We just had some tough moments before."

Which is, give or take a few years, is how the Cubs still refer to the last century.

Moscow police detain 40 as gay activists demand right to hold parade, face Christian protest

MOSCOW (AP) ? Gay activists tried to stage two demonstrations in Moscow on Sunday to demand the right to hold a gay pride parade in the Russian capital, but they were blocked first by Orthodox Christian opponents and then by police, who detained a total of about 40 people from both sides.

The gay activists first gathered outside the city council building, where a few scuffles occurred as their opponents tried to disrupt the demonstration, decrying homosexuality as a sin. After police broke up that protest, another group tried to stage a second protest at city hall, but once again police moved in and detained participants, including prominent gay rights activist Nikolai Alexeyev.

The majority of those detained were gay activists, but some of the Christian demonstrators also were pushed into police buses. Police said about 40 people were detained in all.

Homosexuality was decriminalized in Russia in 1993, but anti-gay sentiment remains strong.

Activists have long petitioned the Moscow government for permission to stage such a parade, but have always been denied. Former Mayor Yuri Luzhkov described gay parades as "satanic," while current Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has said he disapproves of gay gatherings because they could offend the religious beliefs of many Russians.

Gay activist Galina Kaptur criticized city authorities for treating homosexuality as a contagious disease that would be spread through society if gays were allowed to hold a parade.

"It's as if they thought that if all left-handed people held a parade, then afterward everyone would become left-handed," Kaptur said. "This is wrong."

Among the opponents of gay rights was Dmitry Tsarionov, who spoke to the crowd in front of a sign that said "Moscow is not Sodom."

"I will not allow perverts to bring the wrath of God onto our city," he said. "I want our children to live in a country where a sin that so awfully distorts human nature is not preached in schools."

This month, Alexeyev became the first person convicted under a new law in St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city, which makes it a crime to spread "gay propaganda" among minors. Alexeyev was charged after he picketed St. Petersburg's city hall with a placard that said "homosexuality is not a perversion." He was fined 5,000 rubles (about $170).

The Russian parliament is considering extending the measure nationwide, which gay activists say would make it even easier to ban their public demonstrations.

QB Effect on Running Game Stats

Nothings happens in a vacuum even on the high school football field. Since we now have fantasy league action for high school sports, we need to take a look at how high school offenses work (and don't work) to our advantage. A big part of this is the effect that a really good quarterback will have on the running game and vice versa. It's important to understand this effect and pick your prep football fantasy league players accordingly. Let's take look at how the sport really is about the team.

If you've played high school football defense against a really good offense then you probably know the feeling. It's a bit like a cat playing with a mouse...just playing with it before going in for the kill. The quarterback just aired it out 3 times in a row with the last one being a 25 yard gain partially because you missed a tackle and didn't see it coming. Once bitten twice shy and you're not going to let that happen again. You're falling right into his trap. You drop back a little bit more than usual and scan the potential receivers as the sting of recent events still echo in your head. The ball snaps and you find yourself moving backwards almost involuntarily. Wrong move, cowboy. It's a run play and by the time you realize it, you're 5 yards off position...a easy pick for the offensive lineman who's built up speed and directed it your way with the tail back in close pursuit. It may be counter-intuitive but a solid quarterback can really help the run game owing to the inherent advantage that an offense has in high school football. I'm sure it's somewhere in Sun Tsu's Art of War but the advantage of foreknowledge is pretty powerful. A great quarterback can impact the running game by throwing the defense on...well on defense.

So how do we take advantage of this effect when choosing our fantasy league players? There'a few ways. First, apples and apples, choose a player at a given position from a generally strong team. It's akin to the old adage about not buying the nicest house on the block. You may choose a star running back or QB but if the rest of the team is poor, that's going to impact your player's stat performance. Teams change from year to year as players graduate and/or come up from JV. A poor offensive line is going to hit your QB's performance, not to mention your running back and receivers. You need to pick accordingly. Following this logic, the running back accompanying a really good QB (who skill of his own) may find the field's a lot more open since the defense is overplaying and overcompensating for the passing game. If a running back is the sole bread winner for a team's offense, all that extra defensive attention is not going to make his life easy or your stats as plentiful.

So when you're picking your prep football lineup, make sure to look at the other pieces of that team's puzzle. Then choose accordingly.

18-Hole Round of Golf for Two or Four Including Cart and Drinks at Spruce Ridge Golf Course in Arcade (Up to 53% Off)

Golf is one of the few sports in which players can compete against themselves, along with paddleball and seeing how many potatoes they can eat. Put yourself to the test with this Groupon.

Choose Between Two Options

$29 for a golf-outing package for two (up to a $58 total value)

  • 18-hole round of golf for two, including one cart rental (a $50 value)
  • Four beers or soft drinks (up to an $8 value)

$55 for a golf-outing package for four (up to a $116 total value)

  • 18-hole round of golf for four, including two cart rentals (a $100 value)
  • Eight beers or soft drinks (up to a $16 value)

With both options, golfers traverse Spruce Ridge Golf Course?s 9-hole layout twice for an 18-hole round.

Spruce Ridge Golf Course

Spruce Ridge?s nine-hole course craftily incorporates 200 acres of Wyoming County countryside into a scenic, 3,131-yard tapestry of fairways and greens. Throughout the round, golfers aim drives down gently rolling fairways, on the edges of which loom undesirable destinations including knee-high fescue grass, ponds, and headquarters for earthworm Mafiosi. Water hazards complicate passage on four holes, including the par 4 seventh, where two ponds hug the left side and contribute to its reputation as the course?s most difficult hole. After rounds, golfers can snag a hot dog at the concession stand to ward off hunger or use as an unconventional putter.

The Groupon Guide to: Imaginary Friends

Even the rare popular, well-adjusted person might lack a confidante to enable their own shameful, suppressed neuroses. Craft the perfect imaginary friend by choosing one of the fictitious figments from Column A and pairing it with one of the memorable monikers from Column B:

Column A:
? Alligator in a top hat
? A big mound of hair with dewy, paper-plate-size eyeballs
? Empowering female role model who's as quick with her wit as she is with her dagger
? Lively, animate teddy bear stuffed tightly with cash
? A clown, for any child who is still entertained by clowns

Column B:
? Mr. Huggencuddle
? Crunchy Clementine
? Sheriff Bubbles
? Bond? James Bond? New Stepdad, James Bond
? The Glumpster

The New Math of Renewable Energy: $50 = $100

By David Kreutzer, Ph.D. ~

Suppose you could produce $50 of electricity but it cost you $100 to do so. Would that make any sense? It would if you work at the White House.

In a speech at a wind-turbine blade manufacturer in Iowa, President Obama called for extending two sets of subsidies that turn energy economics upside down and force higher costs on consumers and taxpayers.

The first extension is for the production tax credit (PTC), which is set to expire at the end of the year. It provides wind-energy producers with a subsidy of about 40 percent of the wholesale cost of electricity. So, when a wind-energy producer sells $50 worth of electricity, Uncle Sam adds another $20 for a total revenue of $70 to the producer.

The second extension is for the Advanced Energy Manufacturing Credit?originally funded in President Obama?s ?stimulus? bill. This 30 percent credit cuts the cost of $100 worth of equipment to just $70.

So there you have it. Fifty dollars of actual revenue is bumped up to $70 with the PTC and $100 of costs are cut to $70 after the special tax credit. That is, $50 = $100 after taxpayers make up the difference.

When wind-energy advocates claim that wind power is on the verge of being competitive, they mean that after the PTC and the manufacturing credit, wind is almost, maybe someday soon, or maybe later (and only if you ignore transmission costs and fickleness of supply problems) on par with conventional power. What a deal.

Perhaps not all of the costs of the wind farm will qualify for the manufacturing credit, but don?t despair. There is more. Many states and regions have renewable power mandates that force consumers to buy renewable electricity?regardless of costs. So there is almost no limit to how expensive renewable electricity can be and still generate a profit for the supplier.

And even that?s not all. Many renewable energy projects and manufacturers receive federal loan guarantees that cut millions of dollars off their costs. In green-energy math, $50 may be greater than $100.

No matter how slick the financial shell games may be?subsidies on top of subsidies on top of mandates?overpriced electricity cannot boost the economy. It may seem like a boost if you are the one getting the subsidy?at least for a while. The workers at the Iowa plant better hope their presidential green-energy photo op works out better for them than it did for Solyndra?s employees.

For something so simple, pasta is serious business

A woman touches pasta in a hotel conference room in Rome, Friday, May 18, 2012. Pasta sales worldwide have grown steadily over the past three years. (AP) ? They twirled, they sniffed, they slurped, they chewed.

The dozen housewives who gathered in a Rome hotel on a recent afternoon took their work terribly seriously, rating plates of pasta for chewiness, saltiness, gumminess or done-ness ? that perfect balance known as "al dente," or firm to the bite.

Pasta is serious business in Italy, and the recent blind taste test organized by the world's biggest pasta maker drove home that an awful lot of thought goes into making the simple combination of durum wheat semolina and water from which Italy's national dish is made.

"The simpler it is, the more testing it takes," said Stefania Fochi, in charge of consumer testing for market leader Barilla, which organized the taste test.

Pasta sales worldwide have grown steadily over the past three years, to euros 22.3 billion last year, according to Euromonitor research. In Italy, however, sales have fallen steadily over that same timeframe as the economy suffers and stores are forced to offer discounts. National pasta sales dropped to euros 2.7 billion last year from euros 3.1 billion in 2009 ? meaning spaghetti makers in these days of austerity need to try harder to keep their customers loyal.

Granted, in Italy, it's not a huge challenge given that most Italians eat a plate of pasta ? be it spaghetti alla carbonara, penne al ragu or orecchiette with broccoli ? at least once a day. But they are terribly discerning customers: A noodle is not just a noodle.

"Some were sticky, some were good, al dente and cooked the right amount of time," said Stefania De Rossi, a 46-year-old mother of three who was selected for the taste test because of her family's daily pasta habit. "I liked the last one (identified only by its code name: V36). It wasn't super smooth, it was a bit rough but seemed better."

Her pickiness stems in part from Italians' particular obsession with food: Eating in Italy is taken very seriously on both a family and cultural level. The Slow Food movement was born here and you can smell, see and taste this way of life at this time of year in outdoor markets, exploding with bundles of fresh asparagus now that the green and purple hills of artichokes have begun to wane.

And what better way to enjoy those asparagus tips than to sautee them in olive oil with bits of speck, a smoky cut of prosciutto, and toss the whole thing with a small mound of linguine?

"Pasta is truly the symbol, the emblem not just of Italian food ... but the principal plate of the Mediterranean diet," said Amelia Germoleo, vice director of the National Pasta Museum in Rome. "It's profoundly rooted in the culture, the lifestyle, the 'being' of Italy."

The museum, which is currently closed for renovations, seeks to enlighten visitors about pasta's past, including the very Italian origins of dried pasta, the stuff that comes in packages and can be preserved, as opposed to egg-based fresh pasta that must be eaten quickly.

It turns out Marco Polo didn't bring spaghetti to the West from China. Rather, Germoleo said, the earliest known origins of dried pasta date from 12th century Sicily. The Norman king of Sicily, King Ruggero II, instructed a geographer to write a book about all that was known of the world.

In 1138, the geographer, Idrisi, reported back that the settlement of Trabia, west of Palermo, was making a type of vermicelli that was "sufficient to provide not only for Calabria but also the Muslim and Christian territories, where numerous cargoes are sent by sea," according a citation of the book in a museum publication, "Time for Pasta."

"This debunks the myth that Marco Polo brought it from China," Germoleo said. "Dried pasta is absolutely Italian."

Agostino Macri, a food security expert at the National Consumer's Union, said that pasta was in the "genome of Italians."

"A good dish of pasta puts you in a good mood," he said. But he cautioned against going overboard in consuming it, particularly with specialties like spaghetti all'amatriciana, a heavy dish using tomatoes and bacon-like pancetta that is common on Roman trattoria menus.

"It has a lot of calories," he warned.

The pasta that was served to the blind tasters had none of that: simply spaghetti tossed with a dash of olive oil. Each of the five brands tested ? Barilla, De Cecco, Gragnano and supermarket brands Coop and Conad ? was cooked in 1 liter of water salted with 7 grams of sea salt for every 100 grams of pasta.

While each sample cooked, women in white lab coats and latex gloves handed out small packets of noodles as they appear in the package, giving the whole affair a sterile, clinical feel when most Italians would tuck into a plate of pasta around the dinner table.

The testers ran their fingers slowly over the slender sticks, caressed them, noted the flecks of brown on the golden strands of semolina and the slight roughness of the grain in their hands. And then they answered an 11-page questionnaire asking them how the color, thickness, smell, taste and texture appealed to them. The results aren't for public consumption, Barilla said.

"For us the pasta is very important, especially for me," Gabriella Brescia said after sampling her five dishes as she packed up and headed home. "I could give up everything except pasta."

Alabama wins NCAA Women's title

Franklin, TN (Sports Network) - The University of Alabama won the NCAA Women's Golf Championship by one stroke on Friday when senior Brooke Pancake sank a four-foot par putt.

Alabama finished at 19-over par and trumped Southern California by one shot at the Vanderbilt Legends Course.

Alabama's Pancake, Hannah Collier, Jennifer Kirby and Stephanie Meadow combined for a six-over, final-round total. Courtney McKim's six-over 78 didn't count toward the team's score.

This was the first national championship for Alabama.

Southern California's quarter of Lisa McCloskey, Sophia Popov, Rachel Morris and Inah Park managed a five-over round, but came up just short in the school's bid for a third national title. This was its second straight second- place finish.

LSU finished third, just two back at plus-21. Virginia was fourth at 23-over par, followed by South Carolina, which posted a four-round score of 24-over.

Last year's winner, Purdue, took ninth.

Oklahoma's Chirapat Jao-Javanil shot a two-under 70 on Friday and won the individual title. She finished at six-under 282, which was good for a four- shot victory over Pancake.

Purdue's Laura Gonzalez and LSU's Tessa Teachman shared third at one-under par.

PPC Accelerates Affiliate Marketing

PPC Accelerates Affiliate Marketing

May 24th, 2012 by admin

PPC stands for pay-per-click and also known as cost per click and it is one of the recent Internet advertising models which is used to direct traffic to websites and there are pay per click consultants?available for more help on this subject.
For PPC advertisers or advertising companies have to pay the publisher particularly a website owner when the ad is clicked. With search engines, advertisers typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market. Generally content sites demand a fixed price per click instead of using a bidding system. Having an agreement to show ads, web sites or search engine results show PPC display advertisements with related content. Television and newspaper advertising use pay per impression method which is different from pay-per-click.
A generalized portal seeks to drive a high volume of traffic to one particular site but PPC implements the affiliate model to provide purchase opportunities wherever visitors may be surfing. It offers financial incentives to affiliated partner sites in the form of a revenue percentage. Thus PPC services does the job. The job of the affiliates is to provide purchase-point click-through to the merchant. This is a pay-for-performance model which means if an affiliate fails to generate sales, the merchant needs not provide any incentive. There may be some variations in the model including banner exchange, pay-per-click, and revenue sharing programs.
For PPC two types of cost determining methods are adopted such as flat-rate and bid-based methods. Flat-rate model entails an agreement between the advertiser and publisher upon a fixed amount to be paid for each click. In bid-based method the advertiser have to sign a contract to compete against other advertisers in an auction hosted in private by a publisher or an advertising network.
