But the battle among summer leagues for collegiate players can get intense.
The Victoria HarbourCats of the West Coast League announced five more signings Monday.
?It?s competitive,? noted HarbourCats owner John McLean.
?There are over 60 summer collegiate leagues, of which the WCL is among the top three or four. And we all vie for players.?
The HarbourCats? signings yesterday were led by Brandon Smith of Irvine, California, an outfielder from Grand Canyon University taken in the 15th round of the MLB draft by the Houston Astros.
Also committing to Victoria were a couple of University of Washington Huskies ? six-foot-four pitcher Will Ballowe and infielder Josh Cushing ? along with infielder Anthony Hermelyn of the University of Oklahoma Sooners and outfielder Brett Urabe of the UCLA Bruins.
They join previously signed Nick Pivetta, Connor Baits, Austin Russell, Connor Russell, Casey Schroeder and David Shucknecht.
?A summer collegiate league is as good as the players who want to play in it,? said McLean.
?A lot of good players want to play in the WCL. Having a coach like Dennis Rogers [former Vancouver Canadians manager who managed in both the Oakland A?s and Pittsburgh Pirates minor-league organizations and who is now with Riverside Junior College] is just huge in the recruitment effort. NCAA coaches don?t lightly send their players off. We?re going to have a pretty good roster.?
Meanwhile, McLean said 10 office staff are working toward opening day, when the HarbourCats begin their inaugural WCL season June 5 at Royal Athletic Park against Kelowna.
?The season is quickly approaching. I feel great about it all coming together,? he said.
?Season tickets are going well. We are very pleased, but are not ready to release numbers at this point.?
