Historic royal diamond goes up for auction

AFP - Getty Images

This 35-carat pear-shaped diamond that Marie de Medici wore at her coronation in 1610 will be auctioned on May 15, 2012, in Geneva.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

A?huge diamond?coveted by European kings, queens and princes for centuries, used to reinforce alliances between nations and pawned to pay off royal debts goes on sale at Sotheby's in Geneva on May 15.

The auction house called the "Beau Sancy" gem "one of the most important historic diamonds ever to come to auction," reflecting its part in the fluctuating fortunes of Europe's royal families for more than 400 years.

The stone, a 35-carat modified "pear double rose cut" diamond belonging to Georg Friedrich, Prince of Prussia and head of the former ruling dynasty of the German empire, is expected to fetch $2 million to $4 million.

"It's a stone that appeals to me greatly as a survivor of all those tumultuous events," said David Bennett, chairman of Sotheby's jewelry in Europe and the Middle East.

Swedish royals release first photos of princess

"Stones from royal collections hardly ever appear at auction. In my career this is an absolute one-off," he told Reuters by telephone from New York.

Bennett, who sold a pink diamond for $46.2 million in 2010 which was a record for any jewel at auction, said estimating the value of a stone like the Beau Sancy was difficult given its rarity.

?It is the most important and oldest stone to come onto the art market, Phillip Herzog von Wurttemberg, chairman of Sotheby?s Europe told the Local, an English language website in Germany. ?It is set very simply in a hook with a loop so it could be put on a necklace.?

The diamond originated from the mines in India near Golconda and was acquired by Nicolas de Harlay, Lord of Sancy, in Constantinople in the 1500s, explaining its name.

In 1604 it was bought for 75,000 livres by French King Henry IV as a gift for his wife, Marie de Medici.

Jealous queen?
According to Sotheby's, the queen had long coveted the stone, especially after learning that de Harlay had sold a larger diamond called the Sancy and now part of the Louvre Collection to King James I of England.

Henry IV was assassinated in 1610, and after years of rivalry between Marie and her son King Louis XIII, she was eventually exiled in disgrace.

She escaped to the Netherlands, and to settle her debts her possessions were sold, including the Beau Sancy which was acquired by Prince Frederick Henry of Orange-Nassau for 80,000 florins, the largest expenditure in the state budget of 1641.

In the same year, the diamond was used as a sweetener to help seal the wedding of Frederick's son William to Mary Stuart, daughter of King Charles I of England.

Kate takes her new puppy for a walk

Following Mary's death in 1660, the Beau Sancy was pawned to settle her debts, but in 1677 the stone re-entered the Treasure of the House of Orange-Nassau following the wedding of William III to Mary II Stuart.

The couple ascended the throne of England in 1689, meaning the Beau Sancy entered the collection of the Queen of England, but since the couple had no children, the diamond returned to the Netherlands.

Hidden in crypt
From there it moved to the Prussian monarchy in 1702, becoming the principal ornament of the new royal crown of Prussia, but its dramatic story did not end there.

The diamond remained in Berlin after the last king of Prussia fled to exile in November, 1918 at the end of World War I, and at the end of World War?II it was transferred to a bricked-up crypt for safe-keeping.

British troops found the stone and returned it to the estate of House of Prussia, where it has remained ever since.

The Beau Sancy, which has been shown publicly only four times in the past 50 years, will be exhibited to the public in an international tour before?the Geneva auction, according to Sotheby?s.

Here are the?dates and locations of the public exhibitions:

  • Hong Kong -- March 30- April 2
  • New York - April 14-16
  • Rome - ?April 19
  • Paris - April 24-25
  • London - April 27-30
  • Zurich - May 2-3
  • Geneva ?- May 11-15

7 Things Businesses Need to Know About Earnest Money Payments ...

After my first post on ?10 Leasing Tips Every New Business and Startup Should Know?, I had a conversation with the Controller of a company about making an earnest money payment for a proposed equipment lease for his business. I realized I hadn?t really properly covered this topic in my last post.? There are some pitfalls to avoid, so here are 7 things every business needs to know about earnest money payments in lease transactions.

  1. An earnest money payment is sometimes required by an equipment financing company (lessor) from a lessee equal to a fixed amount or one month?s rent as a refundable application fee. The earnest money payment can be called an application fee, deposit, due diligence fee, etc.
  2. On receipt of a signed lease proposal and the earnest money payment, the financing company (lessor) works with the lessee to gather all the required and requested financial and equipment information, writes an internal credit request memorandum, and submits the lease transaction to the credit department for approval.? This information is submitted along with the signed lease proposal, the payment, and any application fee.
  3. Some financing companies (lessors) require the earnest money payment as security to ensure its processing costs are covered if the lessee decides not to proceed with the agreed lease (No one likes to do a ton of work for free).
  4. Not all financing companies require an earnest money payment or application fee in every case.
  5. If the lessor approves the lease transaction, the earnest money payment is applied to the first or last rental payment due under the lease. If the lessor declines the lease transaction, the earnest money payment is refunded.
  6. In addition, if specifically agreed in the lease proposal, regardless of whether a lease is approved or declined, a small portion of the earnest payment will be retained as an application or processing fee.
  7. It is easy to negotiate a reasonable earnest money payment. Read the lease proposal and don?t sign until you understand what you are agreeing to.

(AP) ? A suicide car bomber rammed his vehicle into the gates of a NATO base and airport in eastern Afghanistan on Monday, triggering a blast that killed nine Afghans, officials said. The Taliban claimed the attack was revenge for U.S. troops burning copies of the Quran.

The bombing in the city of Jalalabad follows six days of deadly protests in the country over the disposal of Qurans and other Islamic texts in a burn pit last week at a U.S. military base north of Kabul.

American officials have called the disposal of the books a mistake and have issued a series of apologies. Afghan President Hamid Karzai has urged calm, calling on his countrymen not to allow insurgents to capitalize on their indignation to spark violence.

About 40 people have been killed in protests and related attacks since the incident became known this past Tuesday, including four U.S. soldiers. NATO, France, Britain and the U.S. have pulled their advisers from Afghan ministries out of concern that the anti-foreigner anger might erupt again.

On Monday, the United Nations also scaled back its operations, moving its international staff from an office in the northern city of Kunduz that was attacked during protests Saturday, the organization said in a statement.

The evacuation was ordered "to put in place additional arrangements and measures to make sure the office can continue to operate in safety," the U.N. said, adding that the move is temporary and that staff will be relocated within Afghanistan.

Despite the pullback, the commander of NATO and U.S. forces in Afghanistan said that the partnership with the Afghan government was as strong as ever.

"We are steadfast in our desire to support our Afghan partners, and will use the extensive range of our resources to eradicate this heartless insurgency," Gen. John Allen said in a statement condemning the Jalalabad bombing.

In Monday's attack, the bomber drove up to the gates of the airport, which primarily serves international military aircraft, and detonated his explosives in a "very strong" blast shortly after daybreak, said Nangarhar provincial police spokesman Hazrad Mohammad.

Among the dead were six civilians, two airport guards and one soldier, Mohammad said. Another six people were wounded, he said. An AP photographer saw at least four mangled, charred cars at the site destroyed in the blast.

NATO forces spokesman Capt. Justin Brockhoff said that no international forces were killed in the attack and that the base was not breached by the blast.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying a suicide car bomber had driven up to the airport gate and detonated his explosives as international forces were changing from night to morning guard duty.

"This attack is revenge against those soldiers who burned our Quran," Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in an email.

Afghan officials, including the defense and interior ministers, canceled planned visits to Washington this coming week so they could remain in Kabul for consultations about how to quell the violence, U.S. officials said.

In the highest-profile attack, two military advisers were found dead in their office at the Interior Ministry Saturday in the heart of the capital with shots to the back of their heads.

The incident prompted NATO, Britain and France to recall hundreds of international advisers from Afghan ministries. The advisers are key to helping improve governance and preparing the country's security forces to take on more responsibility ahead of the drawdown of Western forces planned for 2014.

The U.S. had already pulled its advisers from Afghan government offices. The Canadian government also canceled all meetings in Afghan ministries, according to a spokesman.

Police were still searching Monday for the suspect ? an Afghan man who worked as a driver for an office on the same floor as the advisers who were killed, said an official at the Interior Ministry who spoke anonymously to discuss ongoing operations. Eight shots were fired at the men ? two at the first victim and eight at the second, the official said.

The Taliban claimed that the shooter was one of their sympathizers and that an accomplice had helped him get into the compound to kill the Americans in retaliation for the Quran burnings.

The Taliban also claimed Monday that they had poisoned soldiers at a U.S. base in the east by recruiting a cook who worked there. NATO rejected the report.

"No one got sick," said Lt. Col. Chad Carroll, a spokesman for international forces in the east. He said that a dining facility worker told his superiors that food might have been tampered with, and when they ran tests they found "traces of bleach in a couple of foods."

"We do not know if this was intentional, if it was what the local worker was referring to, or whether it was simply spillage from cleaning," Carroll said.

World News - Gunman kills two US Army officers in Afghan Interior ...

NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

By NBC News' Jim Miklaszewski and news services

Updated at?5:36 p.m. ET: A gunman shot dead two American military officials inside the heavily guarded Afghan Interior Ministry in the center of the capital Kabul on Saturday in an alarmingly brazen attack, as protests raged across the country for a fifth day over the burning of the Muslim holy book at a NATO base.

The Americans, who were U.S.?Army officers serving as advisers to the Afghan security forces, were sitting at their desks inside the government ministry building when they were killed, NBC News reported. They were shot in the back of the head, Western officials speaking on condition of anonymity told The Associated Press.

U.S. officials said the assailant ? who has not been identified by name or nationality ? remained at large and a manhunt was under way.

Underscoring the gravity of the attack and apparent security breach, Gen. John Allen, the commander of NATO and U.S. forces in Afghanistan,?ordered all NATO personnel recalled from Afghan ministries "for obvious force protection reasons."

Retired Army Gen. Barry McCaffrey offers analysis of the deaths and protests in Afghanistan.

"We are investigating the crime and will pursue all leads to find the person responsible for this attack. The perpetrator of this attack is a coward whose actions will not go unanswered," Allen said in a statement.

The U.S. servicemen ? a lieutenant colonel and a major ? were found dead on the floor of an office that only people who know a numerical combination can get into, Afghan and Western officials told the AP.

"There is CCTV there and special locks. The killer would have had to have the highest security (clearance) to get to the room where they were killed,"?an Afghan security source told Reuters.

NATO spokesman Lt. Col Jimmie Cummings said "initial reports say it was not a Western shooter." He declined to provide further information.

In an e-mail sent to Western officials in Kabul from NATO headquarters, the?attack was described as ?green on blue,? which is the military term used here when Afghan security forces turn their weapons on their Western military allies, The New York Times reported.

The Afghan Taliban claimed that two of their fighters had managed to enter the building in Kabul and kill four "high-ranking U.S. advisers," according to NBC News. U.S. military officials confirmed only two deaths and the Taliban claim could not be independently verified. The Taliban often exaggerate claims of responsibility for terror attacks.

Musadeq Sadeq / AP

A U.S. military convoy enters the Afghan Interior Ministry in Kabul on Saturday after a gunman killed two American advisers inside.

"Our suicide bomber Abdur Rahman along with another fighter managed to enter the interior ministry and open fire at the Americans. Before carrying out the suicide attack, Abdur Rahman told us on telephone that he had killed four high-ranking Americans. The second fighter successfully escaped the building and has joined his fighters now," the Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said in a phone call to NBC?from an undisclosed location.

Military leaders and politicians haven't had much success in stopping the violence, but religious leaders have. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

He said it was revenge?for the?desecration of holy Quran by the U.S. forces.

In Washington,?Pentagon press secretary George Little?said Defense Secretary Leon Panetta was informed of the shooting Saturday morning. "This act is unacceptable, and the United States condemns it in the strongest possible terms," Little said.

He said?Afghan Defense Minister?Gen. Abdul Rahim Wardak called Panetta to apologize and to offer his condolences.

"Secretary Panetta appreciated the call and urged the Afghan government to take decisive action to protect coalition forces and curtail the violence in Afghanistan after a challenging week in the country," Little's statement said. "Minister Wardak said that President (Hamid) Karzai was assembling the religious leaders, parliamentarians, justices of the Supreme Court and other senior Afghan officials to take urgent steps to do so."

In Kabul, Allen met with Afghan Interior Minister?Bismillah Mohammadi, who pledged "complete cooperation in investigating today's tragedy and in taking stronger measures to protect ISAF personnel," Little said.

President Barack Obama called Allen after Saturday's shootings and the White House said the president supported the steps taken to protect U.S. service members in Afghanistan.

"We welcome President Karzai's statement ... encouraging peaceful expressions, and his call for dialogue and calm. The United States remains committed to a partnership with the government and people of Afghanistan, as we work to realize our shared goal of disrupting, dismantling and defeating al-Qaida and strengthening the Afghan state," the White House statement added.

If the shootings are linked to Afghan forces, new questions will arise about Taliban infiltration as well as their ability to secure Afghanistan once NATO combat forces withdraw in 2014.

NATO is supposed to be moving away from a combat role to an advise-and-assist mission as early as next year. That will require NATO to place more staff in ministries.

"The fact that NATO is recalling staff from ministries suggests they are worried about a deep malaise in the Afghan security forces, that they expect more of these attacks," said Kamran Bokhari at STRATFOR global intelligence firm.

Quran protests
Saturday's attack comes as tensions between the Afghans and the Americans are high following the burning of copies of the Muslim holy book at a U.S. base that sparked days of deadly protests.

At least 28 people have been killed and hundreds wounded since Tuesday, when it first emerged that Qurans and other religious materials had been thrown into a fire pit used to burn garbage at Bagram Air Field, a large U.S. base north of Kabul. Among those dead were two U.S. soldiers who were killed Thursday by one of their Afghan counterparts while a riot raged outside their base in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

President Barack Obama and other U.S. officials apologized and said the burning of Qurans was a terrible mistake, but the incident has sent thousands to the streets in this deeply religious country.

In Kunduz, the capital of Kunduz province in northeast Afghanistan, more than 1,000 protesters demonstrated. At first they were peaceful, but as the protest continued they began throwing stones at government buildings and a U.N. office, said Sarwer Hussaini, a spokesman for the provincial police. He said the police were firing into the air to try to disperse the crowd.

The U.N. confirmed in a statement that its Kunduz compound was attacked, but said all its staff in Kunduz and in the country were unhurt and accounted for. The statement thanked Afghan security forces for their quick response to the assault.

NBC News' Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube and The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Study offers evidence that colonoscopy cuts colon cancer death risk ...

LOS ANGELES - Millions of people have endured a colonoscopy, believing the dreaded exam may help keep them from dying of colon cancer. For the first time, a major study offers clear evidence that it does.

Removing precancerous growths spotted during the test can cut the risk of dying from colon cancer in half, the study suggests. Doctors have long assumed a benefit, but research hasn't shown before that removing polyps would improve survival - the key measure of any cancer screening's worth.

Some people skip the test because of the unpleasant steps need to get ready for it.

"Sure, it's a pain in the neck. People complain to me all the time, `It's horrible. It's terrible,"' said Dr. Sidney Winawer, a gastroenterologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York who helped lead the study. "But look at the alternative."

A second study in Europe found that colonoscopies did a better job of finding polyps than another common screening tool - tests that look for blood in stool. Both studies were published in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States and the fourth worldwide. More than 143,000 new cases of cancers of the colon or rectum are expected in the U.S. this year and nearly 52,000 people will die from it, according to the American Cancer Society.

Deaths from colorectal cancer have been declining for more than two decades, mostly because of screening including colonoscopies and other tests, the organization says. People of average risk of colon cancer ages 50 to 75 should get screened, but only about half in the U.S. do.

A government-appointed panel of experts recommends one of three methods: annual stool blood tests; a sigmoidoscopy (scope exam of the lower bowel) every five years, plus stool tests every three years; or a colonoscopy once a decade.

In a colonoscopy, a thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera is guided through the large intestine. Growths can be snipped off and checked for cancer. Patients are sedated, but many dread the test because it requires patients to eat a modified diet and drink solutions the day before to clear out the bowel. It usually costs more than $1,000, compared with a $20 stool test.

Researchers at Sloan-Kettering previously showed that removing polyps during colonoscopy can prevent colon cancer from developing, but it was not clear whether it saved lives.

The new study followed 2,602 patients who had precancerous growths removed during colonoscopies for an average of 15 years. Their risk of dying from colon cancer was 53 percent lower than what would be expected among a similar group in the general population - 12 patients followed in the study died, versus 25 estimated deaths in the general population.

The study was not a randomized trial that's the gold standard in medical research. But Robert Smith, director of screening at the American Cancer Society, said it's the first direct evidence that removing polyps can reduce the risk of colon cancer death.

"There's no question that these are findings that we can take to the bank," said Smith, who had no role in the research.

The National Cancer Institute and several cancer organizations paid for the study.

Government and private cancer groups also funded the second study in the journal, led by researchers in Spain. About 53,000 participants were given a colonoscopy or a stool blood test. Both tests found similar numbers of colon cancer cases - about 30 in each group.

However, colonoscopies found advanced growths in twice as many people - 514 versus 231 of those given the stool test. Colonoscopy also found 10 times more people with less serious growths than the stool test did.

Neither test proved very appealing - only a quarter of patients offered a colonoscopy had one. Similarly, only a third agreed to the offered stool test.

The Spanish study is continuing and similar research in the U.S. and Norway that began recently is looking at the long-term impacts of colonoscopy.

Stephen Raquet, of Mount Kisco, N.Y., finds the test reassuring even if the preparation is unpleasant. He had his first colonoscopy 13 years ago at age 41, earlier than usual because of a family history of colon cancer.

The sudden death of his 45-year-old sister from the disease prompted Raquet to get checked out. He had a precancerous growth removed at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in 1999, and has had the test every three years since.

During his last appointment four months ago, doctors said he can come back in five years.

"It's given me peace of mind," said the 54-year-old business executive.

World News - Obama apologizes to Afghanistan over Quran ...

Afghans shout anti-American slogans during a protest in Kabul on Thursday.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 9:50 a.m. ET: KABUL, Afghanistan?-- President Barack Obama has written a letter to his Afghan counterpart?apologizing for the burning of copies of the Quran at a NATO military base in the country. Two U.S. soldiers were also shot dead Thursday?at a protest about the desecration of the holy books.

A man wearing an Afghan government soldier's uniform?killed the American troops and wounded four others at the demonstration in?Nangarhar province,?officials told NBC News.

There have been violent protests daily since it emerged on Tuesday that Qurans used by detainees held at the Bagram military base had been burned. The incident has become a public relations disaster for foreign forces in Afghanistan.

A statement from President Hamid Karzai's office said the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan had delivered the letter from Obama Thursday.

Taliban to Afghans: Kill foreigners over Quran burnings

In the letter, which is quoted in the statement, the U.S. president expressed his "deep regret for the reported incident" and offered his "sincere apologies."

According to the statement, Obama wrote: "The error was inadvertent; I assure you that we will take the appropriate steps to avoid any recurrence, to include holding accountable those responsible."

Angry afghans attacked U.S. bases after reports of Quran desecration.

Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for the National Security Council, told NBC News that Obama had "expressed our regret and apologies over the incident in which religious materials were unintentionally mishandled at Bagram air base."

The?Quran burnings at the vast Bagram base could make it even more difficult for U.S.-led NATO forces to win the hearts and minds of Afghans and bring the Taliban to the negotiating table ahead of the withdrawal of foreign combat troops by the end of 2014.

Muslims consider the?Quran the literal word of God and treat each book with deep reverence. Desecration is considered one of the worst forms of blasphemy.

NBC's Afghanistan correspondent discusses the Quran controversy

General John Allen, commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF),?on Tuesday?offered his "sincere apologies" for the burnings. "When we learned of these actions, we immediately intervened and stopped them," he added. "This was not intentional in any way."?

The deadly?protest in Nangarhar was one of several across the country on Thursday.

Riots triggered by the inadvertent Quran burning at a U.S. military base prompted the U.S. to lock down its embassy. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

According to?Haji Mohammad Hassan, the deputy police of Khogayani district in Nangarhar province, American soldiers had starting firing at protesters who were attacking their base.

He said that an Afghan soldier then turned his weapon on the U.S. troops, shooting six, killing two and injuring four.

Hassan said the Afghan soldier escaped by joining the crowd of protesters. However,?a provincial official, who asked not to be named, said the shooter had been killed after the attack.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack, NBC News reported.?

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in a text message that they infiltrated the army with one of their fighters who?had shot and killed the Americans. Mujahid claimed that their?insurgent killed 10 Americans.

Do I need a worker's compensation Insurance for my deli? ? Poly ...

I?m planning to start a deli.Me,my wife and a part time employee will be working there. I?m not planning to put either me or my wife on payroll. So the only person on the payroll will the part time employee.
Now i?m shopping around for liability insurance. Some of the agents says I have to have worker?s compensation insurance as well. Do I really need that? I live in NJ

Some questionable advice, above, so pretend you did not read any of it, and follow along.

You are required to carry WC if you have 1 or more employees. The definition of employee is anyone who is the "servant" in a master servant relationship. The hours they work have nothing to do with it, nor does the amount or type of payment.

Evidently, you are operating as either a partnership or a sole proprietorship. You as owner are automatically EXCLUDED from coverage, but may optionally elect to be covered. If you want coverage for yourself, then you will be assigned a payroll for rating purposes, regardless of what you actually make. As of year end, 2011, you will be charged based on actual earnings subject to a minimum of $29,640 and a maximum of $118,040.

Same deal with partners, and members of an LLC.

If you are a corporation, however, then executive officers are automatically INCLUDED, but may elect to be EXCLUDED. Same minimum and maximum payroll assignments as above.

Be aware that your "remuneration," typically means "payroll," but includes many other forms of consideration, as well ? not just the paycheck.

Your best bet is a consult with an accountant and/or attorney who is familiar with business law and can help you establish a business format appropriate to your needs.

I?ve given you some links to get you started. Remember, as with everything, "Certain restrictions apply, see store for details."

If your business is a corporation, you cannot "elect" to keep you and your wife off of the payroll, in NJ.If you?re a sole proprietorship, you still need to carry workers comp for your part time employee, in NJ.

There?s no "only full time employees have to be covered" law ANYWHERE.

Also, NJ is a mandatory disability state ? you must carry short term disability insurance coverage on EVERY employee, part time or full time.

I?m a bit surprised the agents you?ve been talking to, haven?t mentioned that.

Yes.If you have any employee, then you need worker?s comp insurance.Whether the worker is full time or part time, if the person works for you, then you really need worker?s comp.

yes

No. 7 North Carolina beats rival NC State 86-74

(AP) ? For once, North Carolina's offense wasn't all about Kendall Marshall racking up assists by looking to his high-scoring teammates instead of for his own shot.

Instead, the pass-first point guard turned in the best scoring day of his career to go with his latest masterful floor game.

The sophomore had a career-high 22 points and 13 assists to help No. 7 North Carolina beat North Carolina State 86-74 on Tuesday night, extending the Tar Heels' domination of their nearby rivals.

Harrison Barnes added 20 points for the Tar Heels (24-4, 11-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who beat the Wolfpack (18-10, 7-6) for the 12th straight time. North Carolina hasn't lost to N.C. State since February 2007 and has its longest winning streak in the 99-year history of the series.

Everything started with Marshall.

"I just came in confident," Marshall said. "I feel like any player's going to be much better when they play with confidence."

Marshall found plenty of openings as N.C. State's defense sagged off him to help on Tyler Zeller and John Henson inside. He came in with just three double-figure scoring games all season, but hit 7 of 8 shots and 4 of 5 from 3-point range to provide an unexpected burst of offense.

Marshall also hit all four of his free throws and had no turnovers in 38 minutes.

"Kendall Marshall was something else," UNC coach Roy Williams said. "I can sit up here and nitpick all I want, but he was really, really good."

Behind Marshall, the Tar Heels got off to a strong start in front of a hostile crowd, shot 51 percent for the game and even shook off their outside-shooting struggles by making 10 of 19 3-point shots.

C.J. Leslie had a career-high 24 points to go with 12 rebounds for N.C. State, but the Wolfpack just couldn't keep up.

Barnes reached the 20-point mark for the fourth time in five games, while the Tar Heels had all five starters score in double figures for the first time this season.

"I thought everyone was clicking," Barnes said. "Just off the bat, John makes a shot, Reggie (Bullock) makes a shot, I make a shot, Kendall makes a shot. When you've got four guys taking four different shots and making them all, we're hard to stop. And we did a good job of keeping the pace going."

In last month's first meeting in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels dominated the entire way and led by 31 points in a 74-55 win. This time, the Tar Heels remained in firm control and turned away several spurts before stretching the lead out in the final 11 minutes.

The Tar Heels ran off nine straight points to take a 71-55 lead on Barnes' jumper over C.J. Williams with 8:18 left. Marshall followed that with another 3 for the Tar Heels' largest lead at 74-56 with 7? minutes left ? signaling yet another UNC win in the series.

"Once he's shooting like that, I don't think anybody can stop him," N.C. State's Lorenzo Brown said of Marshall.

N.C. State has lost to Duke, Florida State and North Carolina in the past week, the three teams that entered the week leading the ACC standings. This might've been the Wolfpack's last chance for a marquee win to help its NCAA tournament chances even as the program has its best league win total in six years.

"We certainly had opportunities to help ourselves, no question," first-year N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried said. "What we have to do now is continue to play really hard and do everything we possibly can and see where we end up."

While the sight of light blue always incites Wolfpack fans, the red-clad crowd in the RBC Center was in a particularly foul mood days after referee Karl Hess ejected former Wolfpack stars Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliotta from their seats behind the scorer's table during Saturday's loss to the Seminoles.

Not coincidentally, N.C. State athletic director Debbie Yow decided that same day to honor the 1989 team ? Corchiani and Gugliotta were on the squad that won the program's last ACC regular-season title ? before the game to add some extra spice to the already charged home crowd.

But the Tar Heels came out fast with a 10-2 spurt that drained some of that buzz, then answered a push by the Wolfpack that tied it midway through the first half by taking a 46-41 halftime lead.

The Wolfpack never got that close again.

"Just haven't been quite good enough yet to get over that hump at times," Gottfried said. "That's where this team has got to find a way to do that."

Raising and Improving Windows 7 Speed and Performance

Operating faster than every other Windows system, Windows 7 is in a class by itself. In order to achieve optimal speeds with your computer, you need to do a few things to make this happen. By making small changes, your computer can run even faster using the Windows 7 operating system ? here are a few tips.

There are several disagreements across the Windows 7 arena in regard to what will actually make this OS run more smoothly and quickly. One thing that people do is talk about whether increasing the number of cores can actually increase processing speed. You may find instructions that tell you to go to advanced options and change the number of processors that the system is using. Boot time will not increase, however, if you change the initial processors because it is already set to the maximum amount automatically in its configuration. Overall, it is worth a test, even if most people believe that it will not improve the speed of your system. Active Desktop is a feature that some people like, but if you don?t use it, you may want to disable it. If you like to be able to view your favorite web pages from your desktop without having to even click on your browser, then you should keep Active Desktop working. It?s up to you to decide whether features such as this are worth having, or if making Windows 7 faster is more of a priority. You might have a reason to want to view a particular web page instantly, but most users probably wouldn?t miss this. There are other ways to bring up sites rapidly -make one your home page, bookmark any others. Another way to free up RAM and speed up Windows 7 is to set your desktop background to a solid color. You have several options when you click on Desktop, and when you choose personalize you can choose your colors. Measures like choosing a solid color will probably speed up your computer a bit, and when combined with other changes, you?ll notice a real difference.

Just a brief side note ? if you would like read more about this, have a look at this blog: the magic of making up reviews

You can speed up Windows 7 quite a lot by turning off some of the features that you aren?t going to be using often. You can, to use one example, to into System Properties and turn off a lot of the visual effects that slow down your computer. This might make your desktop slightly less flashy but you won?t be turning off any graphics that do essential things. Another feature that many users don?t need is Remote Assistance, which can also be disabled under Systems Properties. There are probably other features that you can turn off as well, depending on what you normally use. For example, you can switch your Help and Support to the manual mode so that it doesn?t automatically start up when you start up your computer. You can speed your Windows 7 OS up dramatically by following these suggestions. The system is actually very fast comparatively speaking and by doing just a couple things, it will run even faster. Programs that you don?t use on a regular basis can be removed with no problem at all. This article was created to help you speed your computer up with tips that we also have used.

Open Up and Bloom - It's Your Choice

Article Directory :: Self-Improvement/Motivation Articles

It has been said that human beings are the only creatures privileged with the ability to refuse to bloom and open up. Why is that? Why are we privileged in this sense and why do we resist?

We are privileged because as conscious beings we have the power of choice. You can say yes to things or you can say no. You can say yes to Divine Guidance and Wisdom or you can resist and say no. It's your choice. Consider this quote by Rumi: "Who says the eternal being does not exist? Who says the sun has gone out? Someone who climbs up on the roof, and closes his eyes tight, and says I don't see anything." You see, you CAN go to the rooftop and close your eyes tightly - it's your choice. Buy why would you do that? Well, there are a lot of reasons, but a big one may be having been hurt by past experiences of trusting and opening up.

And why do we resist? Because we've been hurt in the past, or experienced other "flavors" of hurt like disappointment and failure. We close down and resist blooming and opening. This is a normal human mechanism for safety and protection that can of course be helpful. We've been hurt before and we don't want it to happen again so we create strategies to prevent it. However, things are always changing, and these automatic mechanisms and strategies can become outdated over time and become more hurtful than helpful.

At some point the resistance to blooming can become so painful that we must choose to bloom! However, before reaching that point, we can help the blooming process by proactively looking at those things that are keeping us closed and resistant. We can look for the outdated strategies that are no longer helpful, and begin to dismantle them and their grip on our life. Doing this important work is step seven of my coaching system, "Let Go of Old, Negative Stuff - Beliefs, Habits, and Patterns."

As soon as someone steps onto their new path toward their new life, what they typically run into are all their old beliefs and habits that have been holding them back. It is vital to understand this and be able to address it. If you are not able to see, work with, release and transform old beliefs and habits that hold you in place, you will very quickly return to your old life and be even more resigned. You may say to yourself that you "tried" and it just didn't work out. You will resist your blooming.

I have dealt with this a lot in my own life and, frankly, I still do. Often I would go to an amazing and inspiring seminar or workshop, come out ready to take on the world, only to find my old habits and ways of being creeping back in over the next few weeks. A month or more out from the workshop it was as if my brain was asking, "what workshop?"

Getting insights and inspiration is important, but is only the beginning. One of the down-side problems relating to weekend workshops and seminars is the lack of long-term support. There is often no process in place to work out the old ways of being that participants took with them into that workshop. There's typically not even an acknowledgement that these things even exist! I'm sure you've experienced this in your own life and know it to be true. Lots of people are offering fascinating and inspiring programs, but what is missing is the follow up. Old beliefs and habits have far more momentum and are far more ingrained than any new idea or inspiration. Without the follow up, most of the new ideas will die on the vine.

Learning how to let go of old negative beliefs, habits, and patterns is THE difference between success and failure. In my opinion this is why people became frustrated with the movie "The Secret." They went out and asked for and believed they could have something. But what they were not told is that there is a huge part of them that does not believe they can have it, or should have it, or deserve it, or that it's even possible. That's what a friend of mine has called "The Dirty Little Secret." The dirty little secret is that when you truly desire something and commit to having it, what comes up for you are all the beliefs or constructs that kept you from having it in the first place. These must be released for true fulfillment to take place.

I know how hard it is to let go of negative beliefs and habits. That is why I created an audio program called "Shift It." This is an easy and powerful tool specifically designed to address negative beliefs and blocks.

I have experienced and worked with MANY different tools and processes for releasing and transforming beliefs and habits we no longer prefer to uphold. The tools and processes that really work have these three things in common:

1) They make you stop and notice what is happening; you become a conscious witness to the FACTS about the situation(s),

2) They invite you to embrace all aspects of your experience of the situation: physical, mental, emotional. You must embrace and allow the truth of your experience - the only way out is through.

3) Once you've gone into the uncomfortable aspects and felt and allowed them, you then open up to new insights and possibilities for your life.

You can think of this generalized process as a bridge between two lands: your current, limited reality/experience, and your desired, expanded reality/experience. The bridge between these two lands is courageously built by embracing and allowing your truth and the full-body experience of the issue, situation, or challenge. Basically, you are consciously embracing all your "fears of what might happen." Once you've done this, it is like magic! New insights and possibilities automatically begin arising.

Try this:

Where are you "tightly closing your eyes" and afraid of seeing the rising sun? Where are you resisting your blooming?

Think of an uncomfortable or frustrating situation in your life right now. Write down one or two sentences that simply describe the facts of that situation. Then, write down how you feel about it; what are all the thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations you experience when you think about this situation? Do you feel angry, mad, tired, resigned, or perhaps sad? Where in your body do you feel these feelings? Point to and describe the physical feelings you are having. It might be tension or tightness, a "sick to the stomach" feeling, a numbness, or perhaps heat or hotness.

Allow yourself to notice and experience these feelings. Fully go into them with an open curiosity, with an attitude of "Wow, look how irritated I am" or "Wow, look how much tension I have around this situation." Just notice and allow whatever is there for you as you think about the situation. This should only take two or three minutes, but take as much time as you need.

Then, once you have embraced and allowed your experience, begin opening up to new insights, ideas, or thoughts that may be arising. Just turn your attention toward "new ways of holding or moving through the situation." You can even ask, "In what new ways might I hold this situation." Then listen quietly for your intuition and insights to arise. In the beginning, a process like this is best engaged with a skilled facilitator. However, with some courage, compassion, and gentleness, you can certainly make some headway on your own.

Congratulations - you are choosing to bloom and are building bridges to new lands of major mojo in your life!
