HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) ? State lawmakers are taking another stab at the thorny issue of property tax reform in Pennsylvania.
A Pennsylvania House committee has held a hearing on a bill proposed by Rep. Seth Grove (R-York) that would allow Pennsylvania counties to shift some of the property tax burden to income and sales taxes.
?I appreciate your enthusiasm and time in taking on an issue that has plagued this state since longer than I have been alive,? Grove told the panel.
Indeed, it remains to be seen if lawmakers are ready to again plunge head-first into an issue that convulsed the legislature for several years in the middle of the previous decade, without any result.
One Democratic lawmaker on the House Finance Committee already sees a flaw in the bill.
?Putting the burden so much on residential property taxpayers, as opposed to commercial and industrial taxpayers,? says Rep. Phyllis Mundy, the ranking Democrat on the committee.
It is the kind of detail about which agreement has eluded lawmakers for decades.
